Why are diesel transfer tanks---the ones that you see in the back of pickups---not supposed to be used for gasoline? The pump says it's rated for gas, diesel or kerosene, but the tank isn't approved for gasoline...only diesel.
Grounding? The tank comes with a ground lug for grounding to the truck when using with diesel.

It's probably because gas is far more explosive and it takes a better engineered tank to be safe with it.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear that there's some law that states the tank needs to be self sealing or some such thing too.

Mostly evaporation control and smog issues - where emissions are regulated such an installation won't pass emissions. Transferring is inherently spilling.

That's what I figured once I could look at a picture of a tank designed for gasoline. It had the return line fittings like a vehicle's OEM gas tank on it. Mystery solved---it would work, but it would smell like gas.

This place says they have gas units. I can't find any on the site, but they say they are available in all sizes listed. Try contacing them and see what happens. mailto:drude 4truck-accessories.com

I see lots them labeled for 'fuel'. They don't specify either gas or diesel so I'd assume they work for either.

That's what I thought until I read the info on the tank I have and the ones I've seen in the farm supply stores. From the online pictures I have seen, I think the gas-approved ones have return/vent line fittings on them, and the ones without those extra fittings are for diesel only. My 36 gallon Delta tank has a metal sticker on it that says it's DOT approved for diesel(combustable) but not for gasoline (flammable).
I think those like mine would work for gasoline, but they would vent to the outside and smell like gasoline...I'm not sure if that's all the difference would be.

Transfer flow make in bed GAS tanks. You have to run a separate pump to get the gas into the main tank though. The fuel tank in the bed of my diesel f250 is gravity fed.
