That fawn's odor is one of the two special outdoorsy odors that I'll never forget. The other one a hawk was similar. Clean, faint, pleasant, unique.
I had to go to class, so my buddy Wyatt went squirrel-hunting without me that day. When he came back to town, he came to my place with a hawk that he'd shot. He held it out to me.
"Here! Smell this!"
He had to persuade me that he wasn't trying to pull some kind of fast one on me, but after a minute or so, I dipped my schnozz into those breast feathers
And what a delight that was! I've never looked at hawks in the same old way since.
"Good enough" isn't.

Truly, I am humbled. Thanks guys.
What's your favorite? Grandpa Hank, Belle or The Fawn?
Heck, tough ol' Steve cries when reading any of them. And I simply cannot read any of them aloud to visiting friends ... too close, I guess.
God Belss,
Steve
Tough decision............but Belle for a couple reasons. It has Grandpa Hank in it and I lost a lab named Belle.

I don't have a fav, but Grandpa Hank sure puts me in a different time and place. Then, Dave and I gutted, skinned and bagged the huge old fighter. Let me tell you, getting a 200-pound buck in the back seat of a VW Bug is no small task; it was then that we decided that one deer was enough for the day. I have to ask, what knife were you carrying that day? Thanks again brother.

Well, I liked 'em all Steve. Just can't not like your Grandpa Hank. A Trinity of stories shared during the Christmas season. Thanks, and Merry Christmas.
Ken....thanks and Merry Christmas to you also.

Thanks so much Steve. Dogs must have a special place in God's dispensation- -the Aramaic "bar enas" in the Apocalyptic Book of Daniel means like the Son of God, but in this case--that of the dog--means like the son of Man. God has given these creatures enough and to a degree, the traits of man to become either our scourge or a beloved creature whose heart beats with ours. I've had my share of those--like Belle.
What a creature! What a God! A blessed Christmas to you and yours!

It has been my PRIVILEGE to be one of Steve's friends who he has shared his writings with.
I never tire of reading and re-reading them.
Grandpa Hank is one of my many favorites. He was a lot like my own grandfather who I miss dearly.
Thank you Steve for sharing Grandpa Hank and all the others with me/us.

Thank you Steve, I have always enjoyed your writing and your personal attitudes. For me Grandpa Hank was truly special, and for a couple of very good reasons. My grandfather was also in WW1 and suffered until his death in 71 from being Mustard Gassed. And my "dad" married my mom when I was not quite 5 years old and raised me and my 3 older sisters just as if we were his kids, and in almost all ways we were. Our father passed away at 36 from a 5 year battle with cancer and this was in the early sixties. We were so lucky to have a man come into our lives, To Step Up, to take such good care of all of us. He is also gone now, just over a year ago and I miss him dearly. I was able to be with him at the very end and let him know how I really felt about him, although it never was a secret I was glad to tell him again at the end. Thanks again Steve, Merry Christmas to you and Karen and may God continue to Bless your lives. Take Care, Les
