What powder you guys using with 140 bullets? I have had good luck with IMR 4831; H 4831 & RL 22 with 130's & 150's. I have had some 140's on the shelf for some time so I am going to see how they shoot.
PASS IT ON!

H4831 has worked so well for me over the years in .270s with bullets from 130 to 150gr that I haven't bothered to look elsewhere.
Had a Hart barreled .270 some years back that thrived on 140gr Hornady BTSPs pushed by 59gr H4831. Averaged 3076fps form the 23" barrel and was a hammer on deer and the one Elk I killed with it. Pretty warm load, so probably ought to work up to it...

Three 270's here, two of them love H4831sc. The third is a finicky prick and still undecided.

John I run the same load and bullet in my boat paddle ruger with very nice accuracy.
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

I have always liked IMR-4831 or H-4831 with 140s. RL-19 is also a good powder and lately I have been messing with Hunter some. Around 58 gr with H-4831 or 54-55 with IMR-4831/RL19/Hunter typically gets between 29-3000 fps for me out of 22" barrel depending on bullet and rifle.

I bought 4 lbs of 7828 today, it works well in my .270 and my Mashburn. My best guess is that powder supplies etc may get a bit tight for the next few months...

H-4831 has been very accurate with 140gr ABs but I can't get the velocity I desire from any powder to date. Have used IMR-4350, RL-19 & 22, and IMR-4064 with good results with the same bullet but the H-4831 shoots very tight. Have had good results with with IMR-4350 and 140gr SSTs too but like the AB more. Going to try IMR-7828 this winter just because. I've accepted 2850fps and don't feel I'm missing out on much.
Funny because I can easily hit 3100fps with 130gr bullets but the 140's just start to get ugly when I reach 2900fps.

My first grabs for 130s, 140s, and 150s is H4831 and R22. 22 will always beat 4831 in terms of speed. I let the accuracy between the two determine my choice. Many times it goes twd 4831, but it sways twd R22 as well. The added speed is nice when 22 gets the nod.
I'll go out on a limb and say that if H4831 or R22 wont do it in your 270Win, it's time to change bullets or trip the bbl.

I have only tried IMR 4350 with both Horn. and Serria 140's..Groups were excellent..So I never tried anything else..So far they have been great killers..

Bob, so far I have used the Serria's on mule deer and whitetails..I am not sure what else Serria makes in the 140's..These are the BTHP..I killed my mule with it in Sept. and then in Nov. a nice whitetail at about 350 yards..The mulie dropped, the whitetail ran maybe 75 yards..The mulie took part of the slug in the spine so that is the big difference..I used the Horn. SST on my antelope..he was nothing great..just a jerky buck..This morn.about 7:30 I put one of those SST's though the lungs of a big cow elk..She was about 250 yards I had a dead rest..She ran maybe 125 yards..I thought for a second I had another kill with the Serria's but I had put the SST's in after changing scopes..The SST entered the right side behind the shoulder and range across the chest and out the off shoulder..It was pretty good performance for a cup and core bullet..My first elk with a .270..I like this old pawn shop find..A 700 with a 26 in barrel..About a number 5 I would guess..Also killed a couple coyotes with it..Now we are down to coyote hunting, and a trip to the Bighorn Basin for birds..and with any luck, maybe a shot at a wolf..Have a great New Year..

We had a tag for cows..I usually get mine in Sept. but spent the elk days that mth. helping my gal get one..so had to go late..I really wasn't hot on killing one so late, but the chance came along..so I took it..those Bitterroots sound interesting..I remember Bob Hagel using those on elk and brown bear..out of a .340..Still make those???

My 270 Husqvarna loves H4831sc. High velocity and tight groups tells me so. That 140gr bullet is, in my mind, the best bullet weight for this caliber. High bc and sd. 56.0gr of H4831 clocks in at 2940fps. Good luck.

Those elk seasons run long now. The Bitterroots are no longer made.I bought a lot years back in various calibers;left some handloads at Bill's and he is using them in his 270....two 6x6's the last two years.

I shoot them at a little less velocity, but 140 Sierra HPs and 140 grain Ballistic Tips are my preferred bullets in the 270...
I run them usually with 4064... gave me the best accuracy...

What powder you guys using with 140 bullets? I have had good luck with IMR 4831; H 4831 & RL 22 with 130's & 150's. I have had some 140's on the shelf for some time so I am going to see how they shoot. The load I use for my Pre-64, .270 Win. is 57 gr. of Rldr-22 and a 150 Partition. Been using it for years & it works. Vel. is 2930 and it gives consistant 1" or maybe slightly less groups. I'm kicking around going to 150 Northforks since in my somewhat limited experience, they are slightly more accurate and hold together even better than Partitions. Quit using 130's years ago & have never tried 140's.BTW, the powder charge is 1 gr. under max. in the books I've seen. Good luck. Bear in Fairbanks
