This is my all-time favorite book by a guy who seemed to be everywhere.Frederick Russell Burnham-"Scouting on Two Continents" is available on Amazon.
Did a lot of mining stuff throughout his life, but first and foremost was a scout.
He did some Apache and range war (he was on the losing side in the Tonto Basin War) stuff then found gold and got married.
Then followed Rhodes's call to Africa and was in the Matabele Wars in Rhodesia where he lost a daughter. He scouted for Lord Baden Powell and served as an inspiration for the formation of the Boy Scouts.
Went to the Klondike where he recieved a telegram from Lord Roberts to serve as his chief of scouts in the Boer War. Lot of good Boer War-He had a personal run-in with the famous Boer scout Daniel Theron who has a monument in South Africa.
Anyway, awesome book and awesome life.

+1, Burnham lived on the edge for a lot of years in different places. Kind of makes you wonder how one man could have been in all of these situations but I never read anywhere that things didn't happen the way he said they did. Good book.
