Had to get a little more hunting in before the doldrums of winter set in. Headed over to a buddy's place in central MT with a pickup load of decoys. The birds were plentiful and lots of fun was had. Planning to make it an annual trip, hard to have any more fun at this time of year for a guy in MT that wants to shoot up some shotgun shells.

Nope, no dog with on this trip. No room in the pickup for a kennel and no place to keep the dog when I got there if I didn't have one. The springer doesn't get the nod when it comes to waterfowl though, that's the sole domain of the lab. The springer would be steady, but he carries on like a howler monkey if you make him wait on a retrieve.

It was around 5 degrees on the mallard day and low 20's on the goose morning. When I left home to head over there it was -21, not that pleasant! 5 degrees seemed like a heat wave.
**Creek in the background of mallard pic stays open all year due to a warm water discharge from an upstream town.
