For this area, the buck is a dandy. He's a 10 pointer with a liveweight of 138 pounds. My son was cool as a cucumber and made a perfect shot on him. He shot him with a 7-08 Mountain Rifle I bought from a Campfire member a few years ago. I loaded up some 120 Sierras at around 2730 fps. At this speed, this bullet is not as explosive as I had anticipated. A behind-the-shoulder shot at around 65 yards resulted in a 70 yard death run. The lungs were torn, but certainly not turned to grape jelly like they are sometimes. The bullet entered between ribs and hit a rib going out, resulting in about a one-inch diameter exit hole. There was a blood trail, but not a massive one. I would have no problem using this load again. I figure its about as good as it gets for a low-recoiling deer load at moderate ranges.

Thanks for all the nice words, guys. You're right, davidlea, I think he figures all bucks are this good:) 20 years from now when he's still looking for one bigger, he'll realize how good this one is!

Great buck and thanks for posting. I've often pondered that bullet for use on whitetails.

Wow, what a beautiful deer. Congrats to your son and Dad of course. I just love the 7mm-08 and pixs like this reconfirm. Nice report on the Sierra. Never had great love for them as a huntin bullet, but at the right speed look like the do the job well.
