As previously mentioned I just got a new 317 S&W .22. Took it to my Uncles brimming with anticipation of burning a bunch of .22's. Well I think it has a timing problem. It seems to be spitting lead pretty consistently and on 2 cylinders it just doesn't seem to be locking up tight. Also extraction was VERY hard after it got warm. I understand it's a .22LR which is pretty dirty but it was binding and extraction pretty hard after about 50 rounds. Just kind of bummed out after paying a quite princely sum for this little revolver. I'll be calling Smith tomorrow and see what they say. This is the second brand new gun I have bought this year and had problems with them. I guess I'll just have to stick to buying older guns.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your little smith. I'd be boxing it up to send back to massachusetts.

Ditto. Mine doesn't do that. I've put at least a couple of hundred rounds through mine w/o cleaning. E

k20350,
Call or email S&W and tell them of your problems AND that you want a 'call tag'... ie a prepaid shipping label... which they will be happy to email or mail you, will save you the expense of paying 2nd day air for the return which is required by the carriers... Fedex and UPS.

I bought a 317 a few years ago and it had timing issues.Took it back to my dealer and he sent it back to S&W.They fixed it quickly and its been fine ever since.
Was a constant companion in my parka pocket when out trapping.

My little 317 had a problem with the barrel/cylinder gap being uneven and causing a jet blast across the cylinder face ablating the cylinder. The second time I sent it back, they replaced the barrel and replaced the cylinder with a stainless cylinder. It works great now. It did pick up a couple of ounces in weight, but I feel that is a good thing.

Sounds like the same thing that mine was doing when I first bought it. S&W "recut the forcing cone", according to what was stated on the return invoice. It helped a lot with the spitting, but didn't totally eliminate it. Never could get it to shoot worth a schit (accurately), so I let it go.

I was looking closely at it last night and realized the barrel isn't on straight!!!!!!!! It's cocked to the left! My wife and a buddy could see it too. Called Smith and have a call tag on the way. Guy told me if the barrel isn't on right they will more than likely replace the revolver. I'll keep everyone updated.

Yep, good ol' current-day S&W quality! Oh, they hand out a lemon occasionally, but, moreso than most other gun makers, they own up to it and fix their guns, IMO. When is the last time you've heard of a Glock recall?

I'll keep my 63............ and 34's and 651's YUP!! There was a perfect 4" model 34 with the flat latch at one of the Gun Shows a couple of years back. It had a tooled leather holster that really made it a nice set. Price was $500 and I just couldn't scrape up the scratch....

I looked long and hard at the 317 as I had given my 63 to one of our sons. The thing that keep my plastic in my pocket was the trigger pull. It seemed like I need two guys to pull the trigger and it was long and gritty also. Maybe just a lemon but they only had one to look at.
My 63 had the sweetest trigger job done to it so I was somewhat spoiled.

My 63 had the sweetest trigger job done to it so I was somewhat spoiled. A buddy slicked mine up and it is quite nice. The DA isn't bad but for most kit gun uses, you'd just cock it. The SA is about 3#. No issues with any ammo I've fed it.
