You didn't have to join Fleabay for that, the info for ordering the book is right on this page in "misc info".

That is RICH! :), be interesting to know who around here doesn't have a book. I have my dads, I enjoy reading his scribbles and notes.

I have my Dad's from 1987, inscribed to him from my Mom for Christmas. Getting a bit dog eared now.

Is there any more up to date version of a 99 book with serial numbers to the bitter end of production?

No, one could be written with the data collected by members here, but who has the time?

I could put something together but I'd need help from the forum, I've got time. Been thinking of doing something up with actual pics of the guns (model related), Savage related sights, Stiths, Boones, serial ranges, the whole works.
Have been waiting for Rick to do a book, it'd be alot better than mine but if he isn't I will.

It wouldn't be like another Murrays, I'd try to stay away from the historical part of it, would be more of a model I.D., sight related stuff, serial range area's and most likely chapters on mostly all of Savages vintage guns like the 110's 1920's the rimfires, etc with a section on fixes for different model problems. It'd be a year before I could ever get anything out in print.

With all the 99 collectors and enthusiasts out there, I think if you just concentrated on the 99 with comprehensive model designations and serial number data up to the end of production, that would be a fantastic start. I know I was bummed when I saw my Murray book ended in the 1950's (?) with serial number data.

Identifying models is a problem not just in the 99 world but alot of guys have problems with rimfires and such as well, the 19's, 1922's, 23A, 23AA etc. I'd try to make something up that would help out everyone, not just the 99 buffs. A book on just IDing a 99 or 1899 would only be about 50 pages worth.

I finally broke down & bought a copy of Murray's less than a year ago - so far I have found it of little use, an update wouldn't help me much either (really though, it is a nessesity for anyone interested in Savage's and it had been on my list of needed purchases for awhile).

I don't think anybody has ever considered just updating Murray's, and rightly so. First, I'm 99.9% sure it wouldn't be legal. Second, something like what Mad Dog suggests could be done and would be more useful. Thought about starting something myself off an on.. though not on rimfires. I'm one of the confused guys in that arena.

Nope, we have been kinda safe guarding that stuff.
If we did there wouldn't be a need for alot of the guys that show up here to even show up, and we like looking at their guns.
If they had something special it would go un-noticed because they got the date of manufacture and thats all they wanted......understand?

We also wouldn't get as much new data, or get data on rarer versions. So say somebody shows up and says they want to date a pre-war 99RS at serial number 340,000 - our ears perk up because that's an earlier serial number than we've seen.
