This thing looks like the perfect setup for shooting chucks in a semi urban setting. Little more noise than a .22 but much less than a .223 etc. Picks up right where the .17HMR leaves off. I love the looks of the Winchester single shot the guy in the U-Tube video is shooting. Wonder who else will offer up rifles and ammo.

Savage should be first with rifles. Couple of others lined up. Everyone will know more after SHOT.

Heard/read ammo in April or May, can't remember which. Bring it on.

I'm wondering what obsticles would prevent an existing .17hmr from being retooled into the .17wsm....

Repeaters need to be in a Hornet length action.....

Bolt face will need to be larger to handle the 27 caliber cartridge rim. Other than that, a longer magazine on repeaters and possibly a longer ejection port may be required- or at least a longer bolt travel/stop to accommodate the added length.

A 17 HMR is way louder then a 22. I can't imagine the practical difference in noise between the 17 WSM and a 223 will be enough to make any difference. If your neighbors are put off by a 223 shot I doubt you are gaining much other then a new rifle. Which isn't a bad thing

I've owned .22lr's .17HMR's and .223's - to me the centerfire is a whole different league. Folks around here tend to not pay much attention to 'rimfire' level noise, but when the centerfire goes off, head tend to start looking around. That is the difference I'm talking about. Thanks.

I'd say marlin will jump in on this new caliber but I'm gonna get one I don't need it but its new and I want it lol

In places like here in Ga for instance we can only use Rimfire for fur bearers. Past 75-100yds the 22mag doesn't have the ass for a mature Bobcat.

From what I've heard the SAAMI pressure for the 17 WSM is almost half again as much as the 17 HMR. This will probably rule out most 22 based actions. The Ruger 77/44 action sounds like an excellent match.

Doubtful, and if they did, the Remington/Cerberus folks would foul it up somehow. Marlin currently has NOTHING that can be altered/converted to the new round. They've not made a Hornet length action, ever, nor a rimfire with locking lugs, which the new round will require. It would require a whole new action/rifle and I just don't see Remington/Marlin making one for the WINCHESTER Short Mag.Change the name, maybe, and they might do it, but they got burned on the 5mm, and probably haven't forgotten that episode.

I'm thinking I'll stick with my Rock River Predator Pursuit 223 for now. Maybe I'll check it out in a few years if it catches on.

I have read that the 17 HMR has a operation pressure of 26000 PSI while the 17 Winchester SM has 33000 PSI. The 17 WSM brass is twice as thick than the 17 HMR brass case. The velocity of the 20 Gr bullet fired from a 17 Hornet is 3650 ft/sec while the 17 Win SM MV 20 Gr bullet is 3000 ft/sec. The 20 Gr bullet fire from a 17 HMR has a MV of 2375 ft/sec. The 20 Gr bullet fired from !7 Rem MV is a bit over 4000 ft/sec. I will be getting a CZ 17 Hornet rifle when they become available and a 17 Win Super Mag RF rifle should a brand becomes available that I like. I like low muzzle blast low recoil rifles so I may end up having a rimfire 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 WSM, and centerfire 17 Fireball, and 17 Rem rifles. I live in prairie dog country and shoot them all year long. I m retired but some days dont feel like reloading ammo so the 17 Win Super Mag look good to me.

Hade chance to test fire the small round at the Shot Show media day event monday 13. Despite strong north desert wind and very cold temperature on the Boulder City shooting range the small light bullet was very accurate and powerful too (bowling pin and shoot'n see targets, small clay bird pieces, steel plate). As not a lot of people were there to shoot i fired around 50 shots 25 morning, 25 afternoon at 100 and 150 yards. Like it very much even if totally forbidden to hunt with in France. Used the Savage and the Low Wall. The second i like most.
Never be a center fire never be a 22Lr, just another thing to play with...
