Hi Guys,

I'm a relative neo-phyte when it comes to the Savage Lever guns. A friend has what he says is a Model 99E in .308 Win. It has a pistol grip and the wood is sound. Unfortunately it has been refinished, but seems like it would make a good shooter. It also has tip-off rings to allow use of a scope of the iron sights.

What can you tell me about the Model 99E? Is the above model as described an actual 99E? What type of magazine did the E models have? The old Rotary or Box Magazines? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking at it as a shooter so collector value really isn't a concern. What's a fair price?

It should have a rotary magazine and will not have a sight window on the side to see the numbers on the rotor, Barrel length and wood style also help. Refinished 250. Les

E means economy,I'm with Violator here on price...they are the ducklings.

For shooting or hunting a .308 is tough to beat.

M1911, the gun is probably much prettier now that it's been refinished. E's were just plain ugly. $250 would be fair and what I would try to get any E for. But as a counterpoint the local Scheels Sporting Goods first sold me my E in 308 for $250 and then offered me about $400 for it after I refinished it. They said they would have no problem selling it for $500 cuz of the lack of 99's in this area. So if it's refinished well with no other blemishes it may be worth more. Not to a collector, but as a good hunting gun.

Thanks for the replies guys...I decided to go for it. The asking price is in the same range as you guys quote once you figure in the conversion from US to CDN dollars. It actually looks like a nice shooter. Bore is very good and there are no cracks, splits or chips. Looks to be a good, solid working gun. I'd say it would probably rate NRA Very Good if you didn't know it had been refinished. Thanks again!

A nice 99e will sell very quickly around here for $400. The buyers are hunters, not collectors and they know that it's better to spend $400 on a 99 than some remchester.
