My first rifle purchase at 17 years old was a 1977 Remington BDL in 308 Winchester that slapped me in the face with every shot. Sold it.

The second worse was a 1978 Remington BDL in 30/06 Springfield. I still don't like 30/06's to this day.

I have since replaced the 308 with another Rem 700 but in a custom stock. Like it.

My old Model 70 .375 H&H kicked pretty good. But, the most miserable rifle I ever owned was an old Savage 99R, .358 Win. Not only did it kick pretty hard, but, one summer the serrated steel buttplate tore my tee shirt and sliced my shoulder. I still have the scar. In addition, the crooked stock with narrow comb really smacked my cheekbone. Of course, I loaded it with very stiff loads. It was a real deer killer, though.

smile I agree the ramrod does indeed alter the recoil characteristics. Did you ever find yours? I had to purchase a new one and have never made the mistake again.

Another vote for the Mossberg 835 12 gauge with 3.5" shells. I quit using those shells and find that 3" shells kill turkeys quite nicely.

I've shot a couple of book max rounds through a 7 lb Encore 416 Rigby that didn't hurt me like that Mossberg does. I've got a 416 Rem mag that weighs 10 lbs scoped and it doesn't hurt me from the bench with 400 gr Partitions at book max charge but I won't shoot the Mossberg from the bench.

...funny my Encore .405 does the same thing... I have the ProHunter Thumbhole stock and no matter how tight I hold it the scope will come back and just "touch" my shooting glasses....

As to the hardest kickers... Back in the 60s when I was about 17 I was at a public shooting range when some guy asked if I wanted to try his .458 Winchester....and he pulls out a Mannlichler-Schoenauer Magnum Rifle.... I had been shooting a Remington 700 BDL in .30-06 and that was bad enough...I probably weighed 150 pounds...and 6'2"... Got down in my best benchrest position with the support hand under the toe of the stock and touched off.... Gun knocked me right off the stool and here I m trying to hold this rifle straight up in the air and three point crawdadding on two feet and a hand on the ground... The owner of the rifle was about on the ground laughing....that was the one and only shot I have ever taken with a .458...

A few years ago a friend was developing loads for his 500 Nitro Express Searcy double rifle... I fired the first barrel and actually had to convince myself to fire the other...somehow getting stomped by the buffalo would have been less painful....

Any and all 12ga Slug Guns.

I shoot them when I have to and then realized how nice the 06' is even with stout 180gr. loads

Well I don't feel like a wuss anymore.

I'm not the only one that hates patterning turkey loads in an 870 or any magnums out of old single barrel 12 gauges.

'bout made me cry...

Ruger No. 1 in 458 Lott with 500's @ 2100 at the bench. Wasn't so bad after I filled the stock with lead, added a Limbsaver, and learned that shooting standing up is way easier. Those, Mossberg 835 3 1/2" though are just plain rude.

Never found mine. A buddy found his looked as curly as a pic tail. I would stop it again oon a dare it is the unexpected nature of the deal that makes it really bad. I did not even need stitches. Can't say the same for the othet three I know who we re dumb enough to do it.

Mine was a Mossberg 835 with a 3.5" Nitro shell 2 7/16oz. That gun pounded me.

hardest kicker for me was a straight from the factory rem 700 bdl/syn in 300 rem ultra mag. bought it used for 400.00 cause the guy who bought it new a few days prior couldn't handle the recoil. i shot it 10-12 times from my bench and sold it later that week.

I wanted a 10 gauge shotgun so badly as a kid. My father bought me a single shot 10 gauge for Christmas one year.

I thought it was a bit heavy so I unscrewed the recoil pad and removed the 2 pound weight in the butt. Now that is more like it, a nice 5 lb 10 gauge single shot.

I fired exactly one 3 1/2 " magnum slug from the bench. Put the weight back in and sold it.

Enough already, just shoot it!

I can admit that the 835 has hurt me a time or two. But my worst will remain a mystery to me. I shot a single shot bolt action rifle that belonged to one of my dads friends when I was about 19. Knocked me off balance and I almost dropped it. In fact I did drop it and managed to catch it before it hit the ground. When I asked him what the hell I just shot all he would say was its a meat getter. Gets meat every time you shoot it. Sometimes it gets meat on the other end to.
