Of which the same can be said of the 260.
Too bad the manufactures ignore it, especially the one with it's name on it.....
I'll never understand that either. I think the only rifle they chamber in it is the Model7. That's because the 260 is a kids and ladies caliber, so they only offer it in the Model7 which is clearly a kids and ladies rifle .... David

I'd take a 308 over the 7-08 myself. The 308 is about the easiest chambering to load for and get accuracy. Works great for hunting too.

get a .270......I need 7mm-08 brass I have to admit 270 has been on the list also. Despite the fun folks at the fire have with it, it's hard to beat a 270. Been looking at 25-06 also. Problem is it's really hard for me to justify any of those when I already have 7mm-08's, pretty much got the area covered - . Don't worry, I stocked up on 7mm-08 brass pre-election, you're not competing against me for brass right now ... David

I have owned and hunted with both the 308 and the 7mm-08 and don't think the game or I can tell the difference except for the apparent reduced recoil of the 08. I'm getting old so that is good!

I have a 308 and 7mm08. Love the 308 more. Ammo availability and price is part of the reason. Recoil is exactly the same as both guns are basically the same. 308 is just a perfect round by my opinion.

I really can't tell any difference between the 7mm-08 with 140's and a 308 w/ 150's, but I do notice a reduction when shooting 120's in the 7mm-08. YMMV David

i had a .308 (ruger all weather) that i tried hard to like. it was gonna be 'the one'. in the end, it went down the road.
have two 7mm-08s that i DO like.
i could care less 'bout ammo availability. i haven't shot factory ammo in a CF rifle for more than 20 years

I have been hunting deer with a .300 WM for going on 30 years. Then about 4 years ago my daughter showed interest in hunting and I bought her a Model 7 chambered in 7mm-08. After carrying it to the woods and killing a deer with it, its the only rifle I've carried to the woods the last two seasons.

I think there are certain people who lean toward 30 cals. and then there is the rest of us who realized that to .284 is where its at. Although either one will get the job done. Its a good thing we hunters and shooters are diversified, if not we ALL would be trying to buy the same brass and bullets!

I'm a die hard .30-06 fan. Having said that, several years back my then young daughter wanted to start hunting. On a gunsmith friend's advice, I got her a 7mm-08 and he installed a muzzle brake on it and shortened the stock for her. It was a great rifle with negligible recoil. She has killed several deer with it. Since she has grown a bit, I have since replaced the stock with a full size one. I have killed a couple of deer and hogs with it myself and I am well pleased with it. Don't know if I would want to use it on anything much bigger, but it is deadly on deer and hogs. Some claim it is fine for elk, but I think it may be less than desired. I know that you can kill an elk with a stick and a string, but it has to be just right as to shot placement.

I like all of the 308 based cartridges, however I've never owned or shot a 338 Fed. That said, my favorite all around calibers are the 6mm Rem, 300 Savage, and 35 Remington. LOL ...and here they are in order (Top to Bottom) as referenced above: DMc

First you have to understand that the group on this web site represent a very small sample of the gun owning public and we tend to get hung up on minutia concerning ballistics. You are correct that the 7mm08 being a relative new chambering compared to the 308 which has been around for nearly 70 years or so is a up and coming round comparatively speaking and is getting play in the 1% that focus on making that 500+ yd shot on game or at targets. Having said that the 7mm08 is a very capable round that deserves most of the praise it gets just like the 308. Actually in practical field use the two rounds are pretty much a toss up. The US has been a 30.cal nation for a long time due to the military commitment to this caliber for most of the 20th century so I don't see the 308 losing it's crown in the near future. It has really only been the past 30 years that the metrics have become main stream and frankly as good as they are the 30. cal is no slouch and will continue to hold it own against all comers. I will say I do see a lot of claims about the 7mm08 that I just cannot swallow . Stuff like it can match 280 and 7mm mag velocities with certain bullets or go to light for caliber bullets looking for velocity. One look at case capacity and you can see that some folks must surely be pushing the pressure envelope if most of their claims are true. I myself think this is pretty much a shame as the 7mm08 is fine as it is and if those folks want a 7mm magnum that's what they should buy .

Haven't tried 120's in 7mm08. But if I blind folded someone and they shot both my 308 and 7mm08 I bet they would say the 7 recoils more. It's got a sharper recoil whereas my 308 is more of a push. Using 150 core lots in the 308 and 140 Winchester xp2 140 gr in the 7.

I shoot the 120 grain factory box Federal Fusions. I used to have a .308 and can't see a whole lot of difference but I do notice it a little shooting 120 grains.

You would think the 280 would be more popular than the .30-06 for the reasons mention for the 7mm over the .308.
