finally got in a little more time on the new ar...

60 hornady v-max, 9 shots, 100 yards:
[Linked Image]

and then yesterday, i managed another pretty decent group (especially considering the trigger) w/ sierra 69 matchkings, 20 shots, 100 yards:
[Linked Image]

for load testing, i put a 12x scope on the gun, but now that i have found something it likes to eat, i'll put the carrying handle back on, and i will learn to shoot irons:
[Linked Image]
maybe some day i'll be good enough w/ irons to actually be a legitimate threat to prairie dogs standing at a couple hundred yards...

before the comedians come in, that is my daughter w/ the gun, not me.

Congrats!! Those are great groups! I bet you're pleased. If not, give me a price......ha ha!

Hey, your daughters pic didn't load. Why not post it again so we can tell you how cute she is and MUST get her good looks from your wife.

what powder and charge you using on the 69 gr Sierra's?

the server that has some of the pics on it has been up and down all day... it works off and on - should be fixed soon.

blammer- those were factory black hills ammo blue box loads. i was just doing an ammo test to see if the 69's and 77's would shoot, and in factory ammo, the 69's are awesome. the 77's were pretty good, too, but it looks like the 69's will be the fastest way to accuracy.

i did handload some 60 v-max's w/ varget, and they shot almost as well... 69's it is, then!

Just curious I loaded some 69 Sierra with some WC844 the other day and was getting good accuracy with them.

what twist do you have?

mine is 1/9 and I hesitate to get some 77gr cause I don't want to waste money if they don't fly straight....

Those top fliers in the 69 group could well be the barrel adjusting to the differeing powder. IE the group could have been smaller. Might not have been the trigger.

nebraska- no, its one i built. stag lower, armalite lpk, rra 6-position stock (fully collapsed it fits my daughter just right, and 1 notch before fully extended fits me perfect). the upper was built for me by a 'smith out of virginia (jon king) and features a 7-twist krieger. all told i have about $600 into it.

rost- yeah... or maybe the shooter isn't that good! lol!

my daughter touched her first centerfire off last summer. it was w/ my very heavy 9-twist ar. she didn't care for the noise, but other than that, she liked it. she really likes this new one, and wants to shoot it more. however, the trigger is so heavy that she has a tough time w/ it. i'm trying to put funds together for a geissele trigger - will make me more accurate, and help the kids be less intimidated (heavy trigger pulls are murder on a child's confidence).

as far as i am concerned, the ar-15 is the perfect gun to introduce kids to centerfire weapons, after they have mastered the fundamentals w/ single shot or bolt 22's. the gun looks very scary, but after they touch one off, they have a whole new understanding, and it knocks a lot of walls down. my niece shot her first centerfire this winter - my ar. at first she was petrified of it, but after a couple of no-pressure days, she went ahead and tried it. she absolutely loved it, and can't wait to come back up to shoot some more (she's in nebraska)...

big time,

Keep spoiling that kid!!!!!!!!!!

Good AR's shoot.

Good kids that can shoot are less common!

Next stop is to turn the gal loose with an M4 on reactive targets, and then tighten her up back on the long range.

Spoil her ROTTEN!!!!!!

Ya just gotta be too proud to wear a hat!

Thanks man!

Bigtime,
Great groups-----------and 20 shot to boot! A good gun doesn't need excuses or 3 shot groups.

It's great that you have a little shootin' partner. I love to see dads teaching their kids to shoot. Getting girls to shoot is even better. At the rate you're going you'll have a strong, intelligent, independent woman thank you someday for the job you're doing right now. The quality time she's getting with you will also help ensure that she's not chasing turds for attention when she gets older. Like E4E said, buy her all the ammo she wants. Don't be surprised when she starts beating you either!

Seriously, you wouldn't believe what powder fouling of a different brand can do to the first shots. I"ve seen it toss the first 2-3 shots 9 plus inches off at 300 yards and then fall right back into a knot.

Keep her at it!! If its still loud, we wear both plugs and muffs a lot of the time. Sure helps.

And I know its a planned photo op and she is great to have the finger off the trigger-- but glasses man!!! If you don't, please do. Off my box!

blammer- just for you, i took my 9 twist out and fed it 77's today. out to 100 yards, there was no evidence of keyholing or instability; i didn't take it further than that - i had come-ups to work on, and 40's to test, and... well, it was a lot of shooting. i guess it is one of those independent guns things - some might, some might not.

rost- i know you're right about the powder thing - i've seen it w/ my bolt guns. however, that flyer was shot number 14... as for my daughter's pic... yes, this one was sort of staged. we were shooting that day, and the pic was taken while i was explaining sight picture (she's never shot irons before). but, she always wears ears and eyes. she tried to get away w/o the glasses once, and that didn't go over. but, that was her actual shooting position (and i single loaded for her - partly because the mag wouldn't work off her low setting on the bench, and partly because i want her more comfy w/ the ar before i turn her loose w/ a 30-round mag full of 223...

as for the noise... i've been reluctant to stuff plugs in her ears because i'm afraid of hurting her. however, maybe i can teach her to get plugs in and we'll try to double her up (probably a good habit, anyway).

we're going shooting tomorrow - she's already made me promise to take her...

Search around and you can find really soft disposable plugs. Sometimes in youth sizing. Might have to check competition shooting suppy places for that. IE google the net. Champions Choice comes to mind maybe.

Anyway there are soft ones that are so soft we keep them handy in case someone in the group snores at nite.

Roll them up super tight, then just insert them a short way, hang on to them till they expand and put muffs over em!!

Ya gotta hate flier #14.....

I was pretty sure on the staged pic!! Having seen 3 M14s blow and 2 ARs turn loose, I know what can happen. Yet I continue to shoot with only Knoblochs which don't protect you totally. Its an issue I have to deal with.

Best of luck, Enjoy the weekend!! I hope to shoot a match finally, first in over 2 years. Should be fun, but embarrassing, but I can't wait to drag out the service AR and have at it. Wonder if I can hit the target standing at 200 anymore....

hit the 200 yard target standing w/ a service rifle... ha! its all i can do to hit the 200 yard target from prone. i am very uncomfortable w/ irons, and i really want to learn, so i pulled the scope and put the handle back on. bagged the rifle at 200 yards, and used an nra 25-yard pistol bullseye and tried to hit that. good news is i could stay in the black w/ every shot. the bad news is i could only x 2 out of 10 - and that's w/ front and rear bags. however, i made an important discovery: i shoot far, far better w/ open sights when i do not wear my glasses (glasses are less than a year old, and i have a very hard time shooting anything w/ them on - scoped or not, but get headaches if they are off for extended periods of time). i just am not very good w/ open sights...

best of luck at your match - hope its good to you!

BT-- not sure if this applies or not, but you have to have close vision if you are using correction. IE target can and may have to be only a fuzzy blur. But that sight has to be crystal clear. IF you can shooot groups with a scope, which you've proven, you can do it with irons too!!! You just have to accept the fuzz of the target. Its weird, I questioned it all, long story short-- trust me here.

And then there is the issue of normal glasses- lots of times you are not looking through the optical center of the lens due to your position. If you are not, that creates problems!!!

Bottom line-- your glasses may be a huge issue, and you seem to have noticed that. If so just use safety glasses.

Of course its more detailed than that, but in a nutshell thats it.

rost- thanks for the sighting tip - i bet it will make a world of difference. i didn't know what should be sharp, the sight or the target. after reading your post, i started thinking about it, and it makes sense the sight should be sharp - especially on a large target.

FWIW the sight has to be sharp regardless target size or shape. I mean crystal clear. In competition I often "smoke" my front sight good with a carbide lamp and make a diagonal lead pencil mark on it below the top so that i know I'm on the front sight and not the target. IE pencil mark shows up and I'm ok, no mark, I'm focused on target.
