Went to the range this a.m. to recheck the zero on my 22BR as I had switched scopes. Typical of Stan Ware's work, the first shot after bore sighting was within 1" of p.o.a. at 100 yds. A couple of clicks, a few rounds and it was set with a 200 yd. zero. A tidy three shot .466 at 200 to double check and confirm and it was good to go.

Temps got to the high 20's and a slight NW wind from 8-12 made for crystal clear glassing conditions. Saw this fox curled up tight but there was nobody home at the farm place to get permission from, so I left him/her for another day. From the fenceline, go three fence posts in from the left and look halfway up the showy slope. The den is about 12-15 feet to the rt, so situations like this call for head shots. Red fox are small, fragile animals with a knack for using their last dying breath to get into their dens.

Nothing came home with me today but it was a good day hunting nonetheless. Saw another healthy looking fox and a nicely furred coyote as well. The red fox population took a beating over the past years as the coyote numbers exploded. Sarcoptic mange (natures way of managing excess predator numbers) has brought the coyote numbers down and the red fox numbers seem to be rising a bit.

Good shootin'. -Al

Around here fox, for me, are sacred now days for the same reason. The 17's and 20 gr. V-Max were poison on them, but I peddled all my junior stuff so's not to be tempted any more.

Stay thirsty my friend....

I shot these two red fox last month. I used a vintage Winchester low wall in 25-20 SS. Only one 73 gr. cast bullet each was required.

Al Nyhus, that front rest assembly looks sturdy, durable and precise. Please disclose the makers and models of the entire assembly. It looks like a fully capable benchrest rig.

dimrod, congratulations on applying the fieldcraft, hunting and marksmanship skills necessary to successfully use a classic late 19th century small game and varmint rifle! Knowing that there are really some skilled hunters doing the real thing is an inspiration to me.

Well......I don't know about fieldcraft. I simply took a drive down the road and spotted these two vixens in separate encounters. One sat and watched me at about 80 yards while the other was pouncing in the snow trying to catch a vole at about 100 yards. I eased out of the truck and off of the road. From a sitting position, I was able to cleanly take both of them. My rifle will shoot about 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards with the rear tang and beech combination sight on it. I could have used a scoped rifle, but that's not as fun. My barrel is factory. I assume the question was directed for Al. I'll try posting the photo again.

I'll hazard a guess as that's an older Sinclair pedestal with a Hoehn windage top.....as capable now as when they first came out....
