Another thread got me thinking about this....
Is there a way I can look up the service records for my grandparents? I'd like to know more about what they did, where they were, etc?

Depends on the war. World War 1 service records were partially destroyed by fire. Also, you need their service number for WWI, as social security numbers weren't in use at that time. For later wars, you should be able to make your request online.

Also a lot of WW 2 records were also lost in the same fire. I could not get my fathers record because of the fire. But good luck to you. There are some that are still out there.

Ancestry.com keeps a database of service records for members. I have an account and would be happy to look it up. I'd need the name, DOB, and date of death if deceased. You can PM and I'd be happy to see what I can find. I was able to locate the widows pension application from the War of 1812, which identified unit and dates of service and battles and the Revolutionary war pension as well.

Thanks for the offer, WyColoCowboy. It would appear that I need to gather some more information. Both of my grandfathers died when I was in grade school, so I don't know their DOBs, SSNs, or that kind of information. I'll do some more digging on my end, first.

Good luck. You can write and ask for them. I have for several family members and so far every answer has been they either were destroyed or couldn't be located.
Otto is my co-pilot.
