For the guys who hunt coyotes with a shotgun ... what barrel length, how much choke, what shot size, etc? Standard vent rib 'n' bead, rifle sights, or optics?

I realized I haven't done much bird hunting the past few years but I keep bringing home boxes of shotgun shell. I have all sorts of random [bleep] from low base 8 to 3" 000 buck. I think I need to shoot something.

A 26" barrel would be what I would use.

As for sights, a bead would work for buck shot or a special coyote load.

It was discussed not long ago on here what everybody was using look for that post that I started to get some idea.

I have 2 870 super mags one camo turkey gun with 23 inch barrel, and one wingmaster with 28. Lately I have been toting the wingmaster. It just feels better after using it for Birds and clays. Barrel length doesn't much matter except you might feel more comfortable with a certain feel.

Turkey chokes or just a improved modified or full works with BB,T,or 4 buck.

I prefer a white bead with a brass midbead on the rib.

Thanks. Thoughts on 3", 1-7/8 ounce loads of #2 lead for coyotes? I have a few boxes left from the days that was legal to duck hunt with. For sure for rabbits, it kills on both ends.

#2 lead is fairly effective on coyotes provided your gun will pattern them. Generally copper plated lead patterns better than straight lead but because coyotes are tough you must shoot choke and load combo's to check pattern densities at 30, 40, and 50yds before you hunt........Otherwise your likely to be disappointed when you yerk the trigger on "Ol' Wiley"...

I use the same load of BB's or 4 buck. Full choke. Other than that, a shotgun's a shotgun.

i currently use a 12 ga. winchester sx3, black, 26' barrel, 3", standard bead on factory barrel, factory full choke, and #4 buckshot.

i've also used a stock wood/blue 12 ga. rem 870, 2 3/4", 30" plain barrel, also #4 buck.

I use a shotgun for predators more than a rifle, much more. I have used several shotguns over the years, 12 ga, 3" chamber. My absolute best ammo has been Remington 'HD' 3" in size "T" shot. This load has been discontinued, there is similar stuff out there. Most types are basically heavier than lead & penetrate well.

My favorite gun is a Benelli M2, 'Steady-Grip' stock, 24" barrel with a .675 Trulock 'Precision Hunter' extended choke. I've used mostly the T shot, but also #2 shot and then some #4 buck.

My Browning Gold with a 26" barrel & a .680 Trulock choke has also done very well. Then I have a BPS that shares the same choke as the Gold.

Predators like thick cover, the sort of places that if & when you see one, it will be in shotgun range.

T O M scroll down to the bottom of the predator page or skip to the next one. There was a thread a couple pages long on this a month ago or so.
