Many NY politicians are stuck on being NYC liberals. They think all the state should be like them. IMHO
I think there were several reasons for opening more rifle areas. One was to get more hunters interested and maybe go out a 2nd 3rd or 4th time. Create some options.
The other reason I heard (seems dumb, but politicians are involved here) was to encourage a bunch of guys to go out and spend $500 or more on guns and collect sales tax. Just a rumor, but I wouldnt discount it in NY

WW-
I agree, anything to bring the age down within reason. It seems to work for most southern and western states. Problem is the antis know that keeping teens from hunting will keep many of them from becoming hunters so there has been organized opposition from anti hunting groups. Maybe this year will be different but I think it has failed 5 years in a row now. But the rifle bill passed so who knows?...

I was thinkin maybe a 10#er....
How 'bout a "grass roots" effort to turn the tide? We have what...125 or so miles between us and a lot of hunting voters along the way....I'd say a flood of mail in Albany would be a good start....

Maybe some of the DEC officers should stop patrolling for awhile, roll down their windows and listen to the shots being fired during the opener. I know the difference between a shotgun discharge and a rifle. Most of the locals get the venison at night from the comfort of their trucks with a dozen cold one's inside their trucks to keep themselves warm and toasty.

I've been asking around and trying to find out for sure, this was the safest hunting season on record in the southern tier...NO accidents in the new counties that could be blamed on THE use of a rifle. Most rifles have scopes and even a low powered scope gives superior target identification.
