Just wondering if any of you guys had suggestions on good books or websites that deal with general woods skills such as real-world fire starting when everything is wet in the forest, shelter-building, edible plants, navigating, etc.
Any help truly appreciated.
Thanks

Don't need a book on starting fires when you got road flares.

jedgreen, look up a magazine called the back woodsman. Nice little mag that gives the info you are looking for, plus you can order books on various other woods skills.

I did a search on IXQUICK.com and came up with the following site:

http://secretsofsurvival.com/survival/live_off_the_land.html

If you scroll down, it has some basic "living off the land" tips.

It's a good place to start.

Bushcraft USA even has a skills training plan or plans. Quite comprehensive it is free.

A basic, but excellent handbook to give an overview is Outsmart Outback II. It is the handbook for several states hunter safety programs.

Have several copies of How to Stay Alive in the Wilderness around the house. Made the boys keep them in their backpacks when they were younger.

Good basics on shelters, foods, etc. Should be able to find it online pretty easily. let me know if you need an ISBN #.

Get the series of "Foxfire" books. The books cover just about everything you'd want to know.

Thanks for the replies. There used to be a guy that wrote the Outdoor Skills/Wilderness Survival stuff for Field and Stream 2-3 years ago but I don't remember his name. Does anyone know the writer I'm talking about?
Thanks

The Bushcraft USA site is excellent, as was noted above.
The Bushclass Forum was started by "IA Woodsman," a former USAF Survival Instructor. He is very informative and his short videos on how to do various things out in the woods are well done.

Here is an excellent You Tube video produced by the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Dept. The man narrating and advising has been a many years survival instructor. He gives very good advice regarding what you should always carry, what to do with your gear, and what not to do. Take a look.

Thanks for the videos. I'll also check the Bushcraft USA site.
What type of fire starter do you like to carry? Vaseline cotton balls? Commercial firestarter? Just curious

Vaseline cotton balls and a couple Bic lighters. The best advice I can give is to get out and build some fires.Learning on line is fine but don't make the mistake of thinking you know anything untill you actually do it.

Always remember the KISS principal and that survival is mostly about not being stupid and not doing dangerous things.(like eating plants you have only identified from a book or computer)

That's what I carried when I was a real outdoorsman. We should compile some books. There is a plethora of outdoor knowledge here.
