I am not sure how many people are knowledgeable about the Florida Take Your Gun To Work Law, but I thought I would pass this along and hope for some responses.
Last week I had dinner from some upper level managers from my company, along with about 5 others from my office. While we talked about busniess subjects mostly, there was a subject directed directly at me from a Director from the corporate office.
He told me that I was not allowed to bring a firearm onto the company property and he knows that I do. (statement paraphrased).
I responded that I had a Florida CWP and that I had a legal right to have a firearm locked in my vehicle in the parking lot. I then referred to the Florida Take your gun to Work law, which he seemed oblivous to.

Now it is my understanding of the law, that an employer many not even ask an employee if he has a firearm in his vehicle, based upon the Florida Law.

I am a little concerned for my job, so what advice can I get from real gun owners? I don't like it when someone tries to take my rights away for any reason, so.....

I also live in FL, and I think you have the proper understanding of the law. However, with FL employment law being what it is an employer does not have to give cause if he chooses to terminate your employment. Witnesses to the above conversation might help win a suit after losing yoiur job, but that would be difficult to prove.

As an aside, where I work firearms in cars are allowed, however the company wants a copy of my CWP and for me to register serial numbers with them. I do not comply, and understand that if found out it could cost me my job for violating company policy, not for having the firearm. A risk I will take as I will not register my weapons with them.

I wonder if your company's policy about obtained the documentation could be a violation of the law? It might be a good idea to consult a lawyer on that one.

We in AR had our Lt. Govner, sign into law no one has the right to know who has a CCW or the right to publish or list them. As we follow most other states, I'm sure FL has or will have this law. In Texas where I work , it is illegal to bar someone from carrying to work their CCW, and can't ask. Only exceptions are federal, state, gov. Buildings or banks!

JustaShooter, if you don't mind me asking, how does your boss know that you bring your gun to work?

Any "Take Your Gun to Work" law is sketchy IMO, depending on a number of factors.

For example, is the parking lot a public one or is it company property?

I'm a strong believer in private property rights, and feel that if an employer didn't want you to wear the color orange to work, then it's his prerogative to have you removed from his property if you do. Further more, if it's a published policy, then arriving with an orange shirt is trespassing.

For the sake of the owner however, I think that it's in their best interest to allow you to have a firearm on their property. I'd like to see liability laws written in such a manner that should something happen to you while on their property, and you couldn't defend yourself due to their policy, then your injury or death was their liability.

Get laws like that, then have a few wrongful death or injury lawsuits happen, employers would open their doors to employees that carry.


Sorry for the rant and hijack. As you can tell, I'm not a Florida citizen, so I don't know squat about your particular law. I do hope though, that this whole situation works out in your favor. I'd hate to see you lose your job just because your boss is an idiot.

Still, I'd inquire about how he knows that you carry. Did he search your car without your permission?

Florida has a great governor.

If you have a ccw permit I don't see why there's anywhere you can't carry your gun. I check my mail all the time with a gun under my shirt and to date haven't shot anyone in there! I take my insulin needle's to the county sherrif office and leave my gun in the car. Can't go into any hospital around here with a gun concealed or otherwise. Pretty obvious that the ccw laws were written to exclude government offices from having to allow a licensed carryer to carry! I can see a store not allowing carry in it, it's their store and they aren't the only store avaliable for what they sell.

I guarantee if an employee gets shot and killed by another employee in the companies parking lot that company will get sued.
So that liability issue goes both ways.

Not that they should "know" you have one in your car but, in Florida, you're allowed to have a gun in your car at work! Tell them to suck a big bag of richards! NO CCW needed either! AND I wouldn't be giving them a copy or showing them my license to carry OR a description of ANY firearm either!
