Reference identifying family members....In my thinking that starts becoming an offensive, rather than defensive, encounter.
When I think of a defensive shooting, I think of being attacked or threatened with an imminent attack...Getting mugged in a parking lot, carjacking, etc.

I don't separate "offense" and "defense" in that manner. To my mind, offense = assault. So basically, any encounter in which I'm required to use my firearm in a civilized nation is going to be "defensive" in nature.
Just a difference in terminology. No biggie.
