Who here is running one? I'm specifically interested in "realworld" accuracy and velocity comparisons between it and the 243 AI with 105 VLD's.......As always, pictures and field experiences are welcomed!

I had one for a short while but never ran VLD type stuff through it. Spent little time working with it actually. You'd likely want a 3.1"-ish mag box if planning on running the really long-nosed stuff. If working with 2.8" mag confines, it is going to be stupid-tight.

Ya, 10-4....I had one built several years ago but it was a pig and a 12 twist to boot...Still got a ton of fireformed brass which has got me thinking!

xverm,

I dunno' if it means anything to you and you probably have a hold on it already, but Dan Dowling told me personally that he'd never build a 6 A.I. on a SA 700. Maybe it'd work out decent with a Wyatt's box, but I think you're going to really hate sticking those VLDs way down in the case to fit in a 2.8" box.

Boxer has some pretty good pictures illustrating just how poorly it fits into a 700 SA.

Not a 6Rem AI but,, the 6XC COAL 2.740-2.750 fits about everything. Anyway it was designed to fit and feed in everything.

2.750" COAL pictured

Ya, the mag box thing doesn't scare me but I do think a Wyatt would be worthwhile.........Be interesting to compare velocities between the 6mmAI and 243AI with 105's @ 2.8".......Throats are easy.......! On the other hand Lapua brass is worth building around. It's just that I have 1000 pieces of 6mm AI already prepped and fireformed..

The 6XC is definitely cool but if not for the already fireformed 6mm AI stuff I'd probably just go 243AI for the extra speed and Lapua brass.......

My 6mm Crusader is close to a 6mm AI. it has a 32 degree shoulder and is same parent case.

accuracy is second to none...

105 amaxes at 3350 fps here in WY. Gain twist Bartlein barrel. starts 1-9 and ends 1-8. great barrels grin

I run badger M5 with the front plate in mag removed. loaded with the 105 is 2.945" COAL

had a 243AI and it would shoot the 105 at 3274 with great results. and 115 Dtacs at 3178. ran a M5 in it too.

X-verm-this is just my take but add 100 fps for the 6 case over the 243 whether going standard and or Ai'd.

I've been around the 6's enough to know that for me, and emphasis is for me but I'd go 243 AI in a shorty action and 6/06Ai in a long action.

Just my way, best of luck to ya.

No use for a 6Rem unless you've got a box of at least 3".

I'd like to see someone do up a 6AI in a Tikka T3, with things opened up a bit for it to really run lengthwise. That'd be a pretty cooking setup, but of course they only twisted the barrel 10".

X-VERMINATOR I dont get your reasoning at all, you think the 243AI has extra speed over the 6mmAI ????????......wrong the 6mmAI will get you at least 100fps more with 105's. the Lapua brass is a plus though.

I own or have owned several 6-284's ,6mmAI's and 243AI's all with 1-8" twist barrel's from different manufacturers, all 3 have their positives and negatives. the 6-284 is the fastest of the 3 but by far has the shortest barrel life.
The 243AI you can use Lapua brass as you can with the 6-284 but in my rifles was consistently the least accurate and slowest of the 3.
The 6mmAI while not the fastest or slowest had the best barrel life (I am guessing because of the long neck) awesome accuracy, the downside is you have a single shot as I do or use a long action for a repeater and you are stuck with Remington brass.

Having had all 3 if I had to choose again I would take the 6mmAI 8 times out of ten and a 6BR AI for the other 2.

Back up & re-group buddy........I can see where I confused folks..Someone offered up the 6XC which is definitely cool but not as fast as the 243 AI with more forming. That said, I already have 1000+ prepped and formed 6mm-AI brass. If I did not already have these I would probably just go 243 AI over the 6XC or 6mm. The Lapua .243 brass is reason enough to overlook the 6mmm but I built the 6mm long before Lapua .243 brass existed, hence the extra thunk and purpose of this thread!!!

Thanks "sendero man", that's solid info.........I'm really leaning here!

What type of speed range does a 6mmAI provide in say a 26" pipe with 90g or 95g pills?

I talked to a guy that had one with a freaking cane pole of a bbl(29" IIRC) and claimed he was getting speeds far greater than my 6-06 produced with a 26" 9tw Kreiger. I also load for 6Rem and truthfully it's not far behind the 06 for me. Curious how the AI version compares.

Thanks,

loder

I built a 244 Imp using a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) short action.
I used the info in the "Sporting Firearms, A Designer's Notebook, which has drawings with dimensions on increasing the length of the action to 3.0 inches. It worked fine. My actual velocity gain was about 120 fps over the standard 6mm Rem. Accuracy was the same as the rifle was when it was new and was chambered for the .243 Win.
