What twist is recommended for a 338-06AI??? How does a PacNor #3 compare to a factory sporter contour.

I went 10T when I bought mine about 10 years ago. It's one of Mark Chanlynn's barrels and is a rock star.
180's-275's shoot great in it.

I have been pondering on building 338-06 on a donor Tikka T3 action, has the "AI" given you much of a bump up in speed? or is it all about the brass?

I believe mine (AI version) is 1-10, cut at 24", PacNor supermatch grade #5 barrel, fluted mounted on a Sako m75 Greywolf-my gunsmith ordered in black barrel. Rifle weighs in the same as a factory Sako m75 Greywolf 7mmRM/300W/338WM with factory barrel - I dont mind it well balanced. Shoots 225gr AB's or TTSX quite nice!
IF I was to build again and go with a light weight setup: Sako m75ss "IV" action with MacMillan Edge stock,PacNor #3 or a fluted #4,cut to 22-23"

My plan is 23" fluted barrel, 10 twist, B&C stock hoping to be at or under 6.5 lbs using a T3 lite action.
Not set on make of barrel yet..

I've owned several .338-'06 rifles and never found any fault with the 1-10" twist. It works for any bullet from 180-grains through the loooong Winchester 300-grain Power Points. Speer 275s shoot great, too. My all-time favourite bullet for literally all game, from deer to mooses is the Winchester 200-grain Power Point. I have not seen this fabulous bullet for sale for many moons, but I laid in a stash several years ago. Hornady 225-grain Spire Point Interlocked is a sure killer, as well. So many excellent .338" bullets and so few tags Steve

I'd think that a #3 would be a bit more tube than I'd want. This is just me but I find the 338/06 a joy of a round. And it's not cheeky enough to boot one very hard so don't make it too heavy.
8 lbs or less all up (sling and rounds) is by my way of thinking about model perfecto.
The 200 NBT along with R17 or H4350 has been my main way to fly. Truly a hammer!

Guessing that's a personal thing aalf. For my rig it balances very well with the Chanlynn tube I have on it. It mics .6" at the mzl. 4 me, and my rig I'd not want it much heavier and or lighter.
The #3 PN would be in the .63-.64" range I spect when cut to 23". 4 me, and my rig that would be pushing it as far as I'm concerned.
Personally for the country I hunt and hike for the most part I don't want anything to do with rigs that go much over 8lbs all up.
How's your 338/06 put together? And are you toting it around the west or mainly in Wis?
Thx Dober

I would go 1 in 9 but 10 is ok. Cut to 22.75". Muzzle dia = .338 + .250 for .600. This matches a Douglas #2. Usually a .125 wall thickness is just right for me. For Dober specs go .150 per side.
This number for describing a contour business is deceptive not descriptive. I use the Douglas dimensions. Other makers use different dimensions / contours.

I had a Hart 23" .700, 8lb rifle straight up no scope.
Would go 22-23 on another, and contour no heavier than a mag sporter, not much lighter though.
200s at 2900+ 215 2790 225 2670
WW brass, partial sized, throated for 250s so COL was around 3.35 IIRC and kissed. 225 PT, Hornady and Speer all shot same POI at 200 yds, 200 BTs shot 1/2 moa every group.
IMR 4064 for 200s, and 4320 great for 200-225s in my gun.
I would NOT do an AI based on my results and those of a smith who tried both. K.I.S.S. is what a 338/06 is, and what a great round IME.

Thx Dober Mine's actually an Ackley, put together in my usual build specs....a 10 twist Rock, .655" at 21 1/2", McM standard fill Classic, Talleys, 3.5-10x40 CDS...comes in at 7-12 bare. It's my only "big" gun now. I've only killed one deer here with it...too many guns/cartridges....too little time....

Mine is a 10 twist LaBounty rebore on a 700 ADL factory 22" ex-270 barrel. No idea of muzzle diameter but it has been a dream rifle for many years. Agree on the 8# max though less is pretty easy. Last time out with it was a few years ao using the 225 gr AB on a black and a grizz. Shoos the AB pretty well too.

I spect that rig will be about 7 lb 12 oz all up (sling and rounds) which is about model perfect for me.
Mine is one of the best barrels and most accurate rigs I've owned. Course all my .340 barrels were really accurate as well.
