lucky you..... My 300 win mag at 65 yds double lung caused my pig to respond in manner that caused Kevin and I to rapidly burn calories for twenty yards in the about face...... She looked like she had a score to settle....

Then the casull 265 gr hornady jhp thirty yd shot that punched a hole through the second pigs heart leaving ten foot of splattered piggy goo had him squealing like crimson tide just put him in the camel clutch.....

If using a rifle, the best ever made for this hunt would be the Winchester 94 in 30-30

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I used to book a few hunts for a pig guide in Northern California. Went with him several times, too. He and all of his guides packed model 94 30/30's with peep sights. I loaded about 100 of the old original BArnes 'X' wide flat hollow point 170gr bullets for them and to a man they all said the performance on pigs of that load was just devastating. Those were a NASTY looking bullet with a huge jagged looking crater in the snout.

That combo did seem to be, to them, pretty ideal and they quietly laughed at all the heavy artillery people brought to hunt pigs with. To be fair, many of the guided hunters had never seen a feral pig but had heard stories of the pigs legendary toughness and 'gristle plate armour' and such, plus they brought what they had for longer range hunting of big game.

I watched ET bust his with his Sharps .44-90, and the 400+ gr bullet knocked the crap oughta it. It went down immediately, with blood spurting from both entrance & exit.

I got to see an interesting scene a minute later; as I was looking back, ET stood there watching the downed pig. In the morning sunlight, a cloud of blackpowder smoke hung in the air 15-20 feet off the ground, testifying to the event. smile

Hey'll, I'm taking my .243 tomorrow to N.C. on my 1st ever pig hunt.
Contemplated taking my wifes 30-30 but I've just never been comfortable shooting it.

And a Glock21.

I've threatened to shoot a pig with my little 22 Hornet, no doubt in my mind what would happen when a pig caught a 45 gr TSX at 2900 fps.

Unless I change my mind, it'll be a lever action hunt for me. I've got an old 1936 Marlin in .32 Spl that has been in the family for a long time.

I am a fan of the .303, that is for sure. I thought I read you saying that Rattler had it tied up. I'm definitely going to have to give it a good going over.

You are correct CT, I'm brain dead and still pumping adrenalin, just got in off the 4 wheeler chasing the donkey across the pasture after giving him a load of #7.5 birdshot in the butt at about 50 yards.

That little bastard had a 400 lb heifer caught by the neck and wouldnt let go, she was raising nine kinds of hell.

If you had just shot me in the arse with a load of 7.5 shot, you'd need an atv to catch me too.

Had to use the ATV, he's a fast little booger, and it keeps the little peckerheads mind right for about 6 months, then he's due another flareup, better than me shooting him in the head and having to burying him I guess. lol
