That's too funny.

Btw, I highly recommend lithium batteries at all times in cameras, not just when it's cold.

Hope it warms up for you Sam! We're in a dang heat wave. It's going to be 70 here today.

Thanks for posting Sam. I have always discounted all the board chatter about temp sensitive because nobody can ever back it up.

I have been using RE17 in my 300wsm 65 grain with 168 tsx in my model 70 and getting right at 3100fps chrony'd in the mid 50's.

I never had any problems with any of the reloader powders and have shot the re15 extensively in my .223 cross course rifle for the last decade.

MOST IMPORTANTLY SAM; Where did you get that awesome mag pouch in pic 1?

No criticism:

I'm surprised y'all haven't done that long ago. Seriously.

1. I did this in the 80s.

2. I lived in S La at the time so @30F is about as cold as it got.

I ran tests on 'several' guns/cartridges @70-75F then @ 30f.

I have the records IF y'all are interested. No sweat if you're not.

SUMMATION: I found more variation IN the primers THAN powders.

W W primers did BETTER than others. I never have had access to Fed primers so they were not included.

Thanks for all the comments.

Jwall, feel free to post your primer test results. I compared CCI 250 and Fed 215GM's, wasn't much difference in my 300WSM. Now that was obvioulsy not comparing a mag to a standard rifle primer, that would more interesting.

Southwind, the mag pouch is from Pat(Montana Slings).
It will last forever.

Texas, lithiums rule!
Warmed up nice today.

Jorge, interesting. 0-65F covers most hunting in Montana.

And given those temps I would feel confident using H4831, H4350, R17 for shots out to 300-400 yards. Practice target shooting on a cold day is the only real way to find out though.

Bob and AB2506, Thanks for sharing your findings.

It's February and still gets dark early, time of the year for gack....grin

Lonny sorry I missed your comment.

Glad to hear '17 works well in the 243. I would like to get a 243 sometime soon but with all the crazy powder hoarding going on and limited store stock I was just dip into my '17 stash.

Thanks Bob.

You might be slighty curious to see what I found out today with H4831sc. Trust me it's not bad news, a 270 was involved , how could it be bad?!

It'll be later tonight.

Rl 17 wasn't available then. I used several powders & diff primers

Some WERE mag, some STD, & some WLR, qualified later.

This morning it was 10F.

I had a cold rifle and cold ammo/warm ammo.

270(22" BTW), H4831sc, 135 SMK, CCI200..

10F

First 3 shots went
2870fps
2890
2900
[Linked Image]

Waited a couple minutes and got 2860fps.

Hmm, looks like in order to get a true average I need to let the rifle cool more in between shooting. Basically the only honest info for a real test is the first cold shot out of a cold rifle.

Someone mentioned it earlier that chamber/barrel temps make significant difference. I found that out.

So compared to yesterday(30 degrees cooler and 2840fps) today was 2870fps(give/take).
30 fps difference which makes sense and should be fairly relevent data.

Of course I had some 270 ammo on the defrost this morning.

Again, first 3 shots out of a lukewarm rifle were slower than the fourth shot.

I had hot ammo and a warm rifle and got this.

[Linked Image]

Hot H4831sc(cartridge felt pretty damn warm) is about 100fps faster than really cold H4831sc from a really cold rifle.

Basically the laboratory has way too many variables.

Is it Spring yet?

Good test Sammo. I've found RL15 to be fabulous in all temps out of my 22-250. Haven't used any of the other RL powders but I may have to try some soon.

I know that since living here, it has to be pretty [bleep] hot, and pretty [bleep] cold before I notice a huge swing with most any powder. And this is the only place I've lived where things get this [bleep] hot, and this [bleep] cold. grin

Oh, 40 here today.

And I'm shocked to see your OP was based upon the weather...

Secret new powder exclusively for the .270 WCF.
Similar to the super-secret CFE270.

Sam not much difference velocity-wise with the 270 loads....that's good.I did not clock mine but noted no POI shift at 300 yards with temps in the low teens,vs 40's the week before.H4831 but the regular stuff.61 gr with the 130 NPT and WW STD primer.

Exactly on both counts Travis.
Ace happens to be the only dude I know of in the entire state that has been outside for multiple hours every single day for the last 2.75 years. He relies on H4638sc in his Socialist 6.5 metric rifle, good to go from -58F up to 127F

That is as close as I can get an icon for EGG ON FACE!!

I did not keep my FIRST comparison test. frown I was very disappointed in the results 'as a whole'. My record says, temp was 80 F and 35 F for both the first tests & second.

What led me to test in the first place was Bob Hagel's book and his tests. If you have a copy, you can see that he used CCI 200/250 thruout.

After running mine in warm then cold weather, I noticed that he only used CCI primers. In my first tests,...... I had CCI 200 & 250s,..... Rem std & Mag,..... AND WLR. I noticed some correlation AND some discrepancies.

That led me to RE DO my tests the next yr. using MOSTLY WLR primers. That was EYE OPENING.

I am even more disappointed that I do not have a copy of the first test. I wish that I had looked at my record BEFORE stating that I had them.

I do have ONE comparison, fired in the 2nd test.

7 RM - 162 HBTSP - IMR 4350 -

.....R M P > 80 F = 3085,.. 35 F = 3004

.....W L R > 80 F = 3100,.. 35 F = 3086

These results WERE NOT unusual.

At that time WW did not have a W LR Mag primer. A few yrs later, I had moved back to Ar, Win brought out the WLRM primer. I bought some and tested, no noticeable diff. Today I have some of both. You pays your money, you takes your pick.

SINCE that second test between Cold/Warm weather....I use WW primers whenever possible.

I truly am sorry that I can't post the chrono data that I had & THOT I STILL HAD.

Thanks for the results, Sam. I don't shoot in that sort of cold any more, but I shoot in super-high heat. I have clocked Re-17 to be as resistant to that heat as H4350 in the same cart/gun combo.

To those speculating about the Reloder line's resistance, remember that Re-17 is a Rheinmetall powder, whereas the rest of the line is from Eurenco. So it would not be surprising if the performance is somewhat different.

Shoulda guessed. It's the same here in Oregon, usually wearing chai latte ceracote and a moss green stock.
