I got to thinking how much we talk about pre mil 99s and wondered how close the nearest one is to that mark. The 99F in 308 I just picked up a little while ago is 916,8xx. What are some other numbers out there. If this has been covered on another thread let me know Circuit Rider

Can't compete with those numbers, but 961XXX in the safe right now. I'll have to go back and check my records for others...

Okay, 969,xxx rather than 968,xxx - my bad. But if you want a high serial number, I think I have the winner. PS: Wait, somebody else has a 985,xxx??? Cool! Details, please!

I know my data is incomplete.... I got almost all my info off this forum. Last year I reread EVERY thread and wrote down serial #'s, dates, LBC's , models, calibers etc. Some posts had more info than others. I feel better giving dates on the data that is complete. Thanks to some of you guys for help along the way!!!

Sounds like 3stars may have jotted my serial number down, I did show it several years ago. But it's a 243, not a 308 - and I wouldn't trust that serial number, I'm thinking it was either a mistake or restruck later. The LBC on it shows it to be a 1957 rifle, not 1959 or 1960. It also has other issues..

Your 9854xx is the highest reliable serial I have heard of.

FYI-Here's something Rick99 sent me some years ago...
Rick99 wrote: Ron, I think the cut off point for 1959 (end of lever safety F's and EG's) is at about the 968000 range. There are higher 900,000 serialed rifles (lever safety receivers) but they were used to build the 1960 99-E and the 1960 99-R. The new 1960 F and DL had the tang safety and were the start of the 1,000,000 serial range.

Just for the thread notes, I have a 99E with round count window, SN 969806, LBC 12M (61); it is a pre-mil receiver.

There's two right answers. Closest in number and closest to the 1 million switchover in 1960 by date. What about closest to 1 million but over not under?
