It really is a good time. Wilderness has a good setup, but meeting some of the folks that post here is what makes it great.

Loaded on your old Redding press, too. smile

Pity they didn't shoot better, however as badly fouled up as the sights are, it may not be the gun or load's fault. That load, 80gr of Swiss 3F under a 300gr MPS bullet is shooting about 15 inches high at 50 yards. I discovered the front sight blade is also loose, too, which ain't helping matters blush

The Hawken .54 was a little more cooperative, I think it only need a bit of fine tuning, on my loading techniques. Maybe better shooting patches, too.

I'd order a taller blade and PM Sharpsguy with the rifles twist, bet he could be a boon for a load that would work.

Thanks, yeah. Looks like Buff Arms has Beech front sights in a 3/8 dovetail, so I'm gonna order one of those. Probably a sporting tang sight, too.

Good idea, I will contact Sharpsguy.

Yep. I'm planning on it. smile I always have admired Hawkens the most of the various muzzleloaders, and admired what the mountain men did with them.

I ran 80gr of Swiss FFFg under a .535 ball, with a .020 patch. It booms pretty authoritatively. The first shot at 50 yards, from a clean bore, went dead center. It is hard to load so I want to try some thinner patches and different lube, but I would have no qualms shooting a pig with it. smile

We were in touch back when it was on it's way to you.
I had hoped I'd get a chance to see it someday.
I'm glad I will.
See you in a few weeks.

I wish I had the scratch to blast 6 or 8 piggies on this trip. All this blackpowder talk makes me want to bring and try out my still unbloodied Lyman Great Plains hunter .54 with globe front and peep rear sights and outfitted with a musket hot shot nipple. The only firing I have done with it is sighting it in. I love how big our Mule Deer are out here, but kindasucks that we are only allowed one deer per year. So many toys to play with, so few tags to fill...

IF I get good enough with my longbow by then, and IF time and funds allow. Both big ifs, but I have high hopes.

I have been thinking about it, but i have killed more hogs with my bow than with my firearms.

Got an alert from travel site that hotels were booking up fast and furiously for this March 12th evening. Must be some convention or concert or something like that. For the benefit of Scott and Dan and others in Nashville for the evening, this is where we are booked for the 12th.

Renaissance Nashville Hotel 611 Commerce St, Nashville, TN, 37203
