I checked the manufacturing date of my EG at Savage99.com. The answer I got was 1949. S/N 5160XX , there's no lever boss code. Does this seem correct ?

Either late 1948 or early 1949. Not sure when they started the stamps in 1949, first of the year or mid-year.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

I would say 1948. Most have a "*" or "3" stamped on them. The date code started around the 517xxx range.
Savage...never say "never". Rick...

I don't see an asterix or 3 on the barrel or receiver. Thanks for the info.
