I posted a similar thread in the gunwriters sevtion, but this might be a better place for it.im looking to put together a long range coyote rig. Shoots generally range from 300 yards to just as far as you want to go, plenty of chances at 600 and more. I thought I had settled on the 24e, but now im not so sure. The 6mm br looks, interesting, for one. Also, if I did go with .243, I think I want an AI, if for nothing else than that I like the way it looks and hate trimmimg brass.
I don't really want to go bigger than that, as I do keep the fur if possible. I'm considering building on a savage action, as I can do resonably economically.this would also allow me some flexibility in calibre selection as well. So what do you think, can do better than the 243?

I'd run a .22-250 Ackley, twist it 8, finish it at 23" long, and throat for the 75 Amax or 80 Berger -

A 7.5" twist .22-250AI and the 90 VLD would be a pretty sweet combo...

If you plan on getting out to 600 and beyond on a regular basis I like the 6mm's Ive shot fast twist 22's 250, wssm etc. and the 6 for me gets the job done better. My 8-twist 6br running 107's is the starting point for a 6mm. I would also look at a 6x47L, 6xc and 243 or 243ai

243
Heavy barrel if you plan on setting up on a steady rest and waiting to pop a coyote from distance. A scope with a turret on top would be a winning combo.

A plain vanilla 243 will get the job done. At 600 yards a 22-250 should be running heavies. I killed a coyote at 720 paces with a 22/250 with a 50 or 55 gr bullet (don't remember which) and that was extremely lucky. There are so many good bullets these days, and for a 243 at that range I would go with an 87 gr Vmax to 95 Ballistic tip. But I just happen to like 243's.

.243 would get my vote - much better at bucking the wind.

Ah, gotcha'. Cutting it off at the knees. When we used to hunt them in New Mexico, they tended to run ~450 or so then stop and watch us, the 25-06 just seemed to anchor them better at those ranges than the 22-250 and 243 that were brought on different years.

If I were building one it would be a 243/243ai or a 6mm-06 depending on whatever donor action I could find. One could go 6mm-284 as well but may run into COAL issues with the vld bullets.
More wind bucking options in bullet selection which will play a bigger part 500+ as well as a little more whop! out there.
Thinking 87 vmax, 107 vld, 105 amax etc.

If I were forced to stick with the .24 calibers, I would run with this: My Tikka T3, rebarreled to a 6mm Remington. Run it with 85 grain Sierra Hollow Point Game Kings, which many have proven works pretty well on a whole bunch of critters from elk to jackrabbits. Not being limited to 24 caliber, I would step up just slightly and run a .260 Rem, with a high BC projectile such as a 139 grain Lapua Scenar or 142 grain SMK. This one is an old rem 700 that started life in the 1970s as a .243 then became a .308 in the 90s. Now it wears a Lilja .260 tube, topped with a VX3 6.5-20 Leupold.

Good call MS! .260 is a really great long range coyote getter. I've been using mine(GAP Crusader)for coyotes since my 6XC is in for a new barrel.
Luck....is the residue of design...

Pat
What kind of stocks are you using on your .260 &6XC?
How do you like the .260 cartridge compared to the 6XC for long range coyote shooting?

Thanks guys. I've decided it'll be a .243,but hopefully will be an AI if I can find someone close by to do it. Right now the Savage Predator is looking like the rifle I'll probably end up with, but I may gt them to build it a little different for me. I don't care for the dipped camo or plastic stock, and would love to have it in a 1-8 twist with an extra couple inches of barrel. If i can get tehm to put it in a limate for me,and do the barrel I want, without a huge increase in price,I'll be very happy! I'm hoping to get a look at the new Burris scopes with the turrets soon, looks like it would it the bill pretty well.

Thanks, I just found a warmer load of 45.5 of h4831 with a 142 Matchking that the rifle really likes. The previous load was in the .3s but was way too slow. Ran 5 groups of 5 and four of those were in the .3s and .4s. One shot I completely shanked and turned a nice group into a mid .7s I need to load more to chrono them now.
