I'm usually next door at the savage site but I'm looking to buy a winchester 100 in 308. I heard these guns had a factory re-call--so what do I need to ask or look for?
Thanks

Check to make sure it has the new style firing pin. If it hasn't been changed out, I'd ask for a discount. When smiths installed the new firing pin, they were susposed to stamp the inside top of the receiver to verify that it had been done, but the only surefire way to really know is to have the gunshop verify that it's been done or have them take it apart in front of you....

The new pin looks like this:

The oldstyle (recalled) pin looks like this:

Here's a schematic to help you, if you think you want to change one out yourself:

If you load for it, you'll want to keeps the loads on the light side. Mine liked 45 gr's. of RE15 with 150gr. pills.... The win 100 is a good little rifle but needs to be kept clean to insure proper function. The triggers aren't very good and there isn't much you can do about them. If you properly bed them, they can be great shooters. Light recoil and fun to shoot. That's about all I can think of. Good luck with your search...

Thanks for the info BSA ,I have a red W model 100 in 308 that was my go to whitetail hammer for many years bought it in late 70's NIB, I gave it to my Dad when I got tired of tracking his 243 shot with wrong bullets deer and losing a monster, last 4 or 5 deer he killed were bang flop, I never did the firing pin thing, where could I get one now ? Mine still has the redfield 3x9 tv view scope om it and the best trigger out of 6 Ive shot.mine shoots to bull cold bore every time I shoot it. very best

Here's some more info for those that haven't done their firing pins:

Call them with your serial number and they will be able to tell you if your firing pin has been replaced
800-852-5734

They will let you know how to go about sending in your old firing pin and firing pin guide and they will send a new one off pretty quick. They will also send a $30.00 gift card to pay for the installation or you can keep the gift card and do it yourself if you assume liability. Here's the address they will ask you to send the old firing pin to. Make sure you include the serial # with the pin:

Winchester Firing Pin Recall Notice
PO Box 10 Cottage Hills, IL 62018

It's nice they still offer this service after all this time...Good luck with it..

BSA got it right. I just got a replacement firing pin before Christmas for a 100 I purchased. There is a good video on You-tube that shows in detail how to change it out. It doesn't take but a few minutes and isn't tricky at all.

With the way the recall is working, it is just a good way to get a dealer to knock down the price another $50.00 because he doesn't know how easy it is to change out or that you get a $30.00 card for doing it. $80.00 difference to me and almost no hassle.

I put one in with no difficulty. The 100 is a cool rifle.
