Looking for some suggestions on a scope. My shots are 1-200 yards where I hunt. But do want the capability of going to 500 yards for future trips out of state. Don't want to spend over 1k. I appreciate any advice.

Leupold 3.5-10x40 or Meopta Meostar 3-9x42, spend the rest on quality binos

Up to a grand to scope a .300 mag for big game out to 500 yds ? There are a lot of great options.
For half that price, the above mentioned Leo VX-3, 3.5X10X40 W/CDS would be hard to beat.
Other Leo VX-3s and even the VX-6 2X12 will fall in your price range. Zeiss has a number of Conquest models that would fit the requirements. You could even look at Swaro Z-3, 3X9s
You could save a bundle and grab a Minox 3X9 on sale now at Cameraland.
On the other end, if your comfortable spending the whole grand, I think the new Leopold VX-6 2X12X42 with a CDS would be a great, all around do everything you could ever ask of it scope. The reason I say this is the magnification range. 2X all the way up to 12X will cover everything from close range, heavy timber fast action to long rang sniping out to well over 500 yards.

For my .300's I favor at least a Leu. 4-12 or 4.5-14...One specialiszed long range set up has a 6.5-20 on it..Another one I tried is the Vortex..it is now on a .25-06..

If going 6x42 you could get a Schmidt & Bender Classic for less than $700. Below would be my choices:
Swarovski Z3 4-12x50. $959 Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42. $899 Leupold VX-6 2-12x42. $899

+1 for the Swarovski Z3. Get the BRH reticle. The BRX reticle is too light to be useful. It is an excellent graduated reticle and you can use the software on the Swaro site to determine which graduation to use for your round out to some very long distances. The nice part is the software gives you holdover points for your round so if you change ammo you can re calculate.
Otherwise my recommendation would be a Leupold VX3 with the B&C reticle.

Leupold vx3cds in 3.5x10x40 +1 Added one to my .270 and was impressed when I used it at the range out to 600 yards..then hunting season came around and I only needed to shoot 27 yards.

Leupold vx3cds in 3.5x10x40 Excellent advice. However, many would fit his criteria...From Burris, Nikon, Bushnell elite series and Zeiss....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Another vote for the Z3. 4-12x50 BT. If the majority of your shooting is gonna be 100-200 then you could zero it for 200, then plug your load data into swaro website and dial out to 500 with no problem. Besides the optics being better than the leupy you can change your turrets with different loads for when you go out of state instead of having to buy new turret

My favorite rifle, which happens to be a 300 Win Mag, now happily wears a Leupold 6x36. I'd consider it...light, reliable, forgiving eye box and eye relief. I've yet to have one of those "all I saw was hair" events, and have had no problems quickly finding game under 50 yards in this scope.

I'm down to either the Z3 4-12x50 with BT turret or VX 6 2-12x42 with CDS. What would you guys pick that have the shoot this type of setup. Is there any other scope I should look at. Many thx for all the input

The advantage to me of the Z3 with the ballistic turret for the little extra money is a no brainer. Brighter, clearer image, 1" tube and the advantage of the Swarovski turrent. I can hunt in NC on day with the turrent set to my conditions and yardages. Then I can fly to Montana the next day for a hunt and enter the new altitude and maybe barometric pressure in the Swarovski app on my phone and all I have to do is set the yardage markers where it tells me to. With the CDS on the Leupold you would have to have an additional turrent.

My scopes got progressively more bells and whistles since I started started buying optics...until a few months ago. I realized that I get this scope with capless turrets, 5x erector assembly and ballistic reticle, then I don't use it any different than a fixed power duplex. It gets dialed in, set(usually somewhere between 4x and 6x) and just left there. I'm swapping out my scopes for fixed powers, and I find that I generally like them better that way.
