I was wondering if anyone is loading the Berger 140 gr. Hunting VLDs in their 7mm-08. If so any info would be appreciated.

I had excellent accuracy and top speeds with a max load of RL17. I'm on the road this week so don't have the specific grains or chrono results, but it would definitely be on my short list of powders to try in any cartridge based on a .308 case.

I have not tried them and look forward to the discussion.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't work very well. I have used them in a 280AI and they are fantastic. I would expect something similar in 08.

Good Old RL-15 in my 7mm-08 seated just long enough to fit in my Sako 85 magazine. I posted pictures here saturday showing my exact load data with the Berger. Love the 168 and 180VLDs in my 7mmWSM

Buzz saw,

Not to hijack, but care to share your 7WSM/168 VLD load?

Thanks!

Marty

Tried the 140 VLD with Varget in my 7-08AI, 24" tube:

44.0g = 2936
44.5g = 2937
44.8g = 2979

Loaded 44.8, dialed up for 500 yds shot 3 for 1/2 MOA on an 8" plate.

Gonna try RL17 next.

Anyone use H4350 with this bullet? I'm going to give it a try next weekend and see how it does.

During my 'experiments'... I haven't had much luck getting game animals to always stand still and broadside- and since it is easier to find them when there is a hole on both sides- I favor using heavier for caliber bullets at their 'normal' velocities for whatever round I might be using. Prefer Nosler Partitions, but even old fashioned cup and core bullets (not a fan of Core Loct's tho) work just fine. I have heard that some hunters use target bullets like Sierra Match Kings on game. Do they work like Bergers?

Having used both, I can say no, they don't. Animals I shoot with VLDs seem to make fewer tracks than those I shoot with other bullets, including those shot with MKs. Funny how a bunch of folks that have vowed to never use VLDs equate them to MKs or other target bullets. They are not the same and do not perform the same but neither I nor anyone else is likely to convince the VLD naysayers any differently. As long as they never try VLDs, they can continue to bash them. That taste better than eating crow...

I can accept your experience and preferences with either.
Haven't used VLD's, nor MK's on game- so can't bash either. In that regard, I suspect our preference(s) for or against are just that and just as valid.

When I bow hunted, the best results I had were when the arrow fully penetrated both sides- I prefer that with bullets too.
My misadventures with bullet performance have been the result of lots of velocity at impact, somewhat fragile bullets, and not so perfect shot angles- or combination of all three.

Are you even reading the question? It kinda looks like you are posting on the wrong [bleep] thread...
