that was right at the change over from cut to pressed checkering i believe? the more knoweledgeable folks here can give you a better idea, however for what i have seen on gunbroker, if it is all original in the shape you describe, pressed checkering would be around 500 and cut checkering 550-575. jmo, lenny

+1...

My records indicate it could be a late 1965 (LBC = "S") or an early 1966 (LBC = "T") manufacture.

The Lever Boss Code ("LBC") is the surest way to determine the year of manufacture. It is located on the lower, front side of the receiver opposite the place where the lever goes into and rotates in the receiver's lower lever boss.

You will see a very lightly struck OVAL (not a circle) with the inspector's number first followed by a letter. That letter indicates the year of manufacture.

You may need a good magnifying glass to read the LBC... and the complete code may NOT be there or it may be indistinguishable due to the lightness of the impression.

Thanks for the replies. After all the pros and cons I ran through my mind, I bought this rifle. Bottom line? I just need another gun and am liking it. After all, how many reasons does a guy need?

It is not.

It's obviously a 79 chambered in 460 rigby with factory bipod and 1/4lb trigger.

I am going to pick it up tomorrow so we will find out. In 65 or 66 I was 13 or 14 years old. I was hot for a 99 then and this will give one from that time in my life. I recently picked up a remington nylon 66 made in 1963. I was all fired up to run a trapline and the ad pictured a man setting a trap with the nylon in hand. They fired up my imagination then and since I am in my second childhood now it all works out. I have a savage scope that has not been on a gun and redfield flip off mounts. I'm guessing they would be period correct on this 99?

Joe says it should be, so I'd trust that... until I get a look at the actual LBC. grin

S == 1965
T == 1966

Located same place as this I:

I picked it up today, and just finished mounting the scope. The lbc is a T. I don't know how the savage scope will hold up, but it is on for now. thanks, Tom W.

Have you taken it to the range yet? Curious on accuracy and how you like how it shoots.

I passed on a 99c because the wood was refinshed, but still have interest in 99c's.

Sighted in pretty close yesterday. The wind got to whipping, so will fine tune it another day. It is a sweet shooting gun. I had no experience with a post mil gun or a savage scope or tip off mounts. So far I am pleasantly suprised with the whole outfit. I'd like to bring it up your way and shoot a moose with it!
