The article that John has in the latest issue issue of GUNS magazine on the "All around rifle" is a great read. It is one of those articles that I hate to finish as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks John.

Don't need to read it. He already said that the ideal all-around rifle is a .29 caliber.

Very good read as always, I was disappointed on one question left unanswered in the article, "which is better the 270 or the 280?"

Dan,
Thanks very much!
A few other people have e-mailed me directly, saying they really liked the article. Well, I liked your article on neck lengths every bit as much. Maybe we could have a Campfire argument about the best all-around neck length... Casey

gordie,
The scope on the 6.5x55 is one of the discontinued Burris 6x compact scopes. Once in a while they turn up on the Campfire Classfieds.

Another good one by John...fun read.Common sense stuff as usual. I liked the central theme of the article, which seemed to be that many different cartridges work well....and that old standards have not been supplanted by more modern stuff.

Touch!
That is ironic... I'm actually in the process of building my "All Around Rifle" in that very cartridge based upon the blueprint of your "honest" .338 WM.
A buddy gave me a Steyr LR 98 action, I got a light taper 21" Apex take-off and Talley LWs here, pulled an Oberndorf style alum BM unit from a PH action I bought here, bartered the installation of a Chapman 2-position safety, and am going to stick it all in a Bansner after I cerakote it myself. It'll be my only synthetic stocked rifle. A buddy here has a Leupold 6x 42mm that he may be selling, otherwise I'll likely do a 3-9x 40mm FFII w/ BP.
Oh yeah. All around perfection!!
Thanks again John,
efw
