Not sure how this got sidetracked into a bear discussion, it will be mainly used for coyotes...

I am familiar with the 100 and 87 grain bullet ballistics in the .250-3000 but don't know what kind of speeds folks get out of lighter varmint bullets like 75 gr V-Max and other lighter weight bullets.

Anyone use these and how fast can ya push them?

I see Sierra has a 70 grain Blitzking. Anyone use these?

Barnes has an 80 gr ttsx. Anyone use these?

Looking at a 1-10 twist 26 inch barrel.

The Barnes 80 gr. TTSXs are devastating on the varmints though I've not had the opportunity to try them on predators I'd be confident to use them. Also in my experience the 90 gr. Sierra were more accurate than the 75 gr. V-max bullets.

Thanks for the reply olgrouser...

I might have to grab a box of the 80gr TTSX and the 90gr Sierras and see what shoots best! Do you have experience with the Sierra 75gr Hollowpoint. heard they shoot good for some folks.

Do you prefer the 90gr Blitzkings or the Gameking HPBT?

The groups with the Blitzkings seem slightly smaller overall and the varmints are DRT. And I do mean DRT, most never move a muscle!

Actually now that I think of it, the top photoI posted earlier is result of Barnes TTSX, not a Sierra 90 grain bullet.

Who knows might even drive over to Idaho sometime and try for a Wolf!

Anyone use a 250 Savage for this sort of stuff?

if i recall correctly, back in the mid 1980's, a gal named theresa reiser killed ( i believe), two grizzlies with her .22-250. she was also known as a dedicated competitor on the national level around about 1957-58, on the bobcat rifle team--being the first montanan to win a college national title with the rifle. there were, however some essential skillsets there--besides a great cartridge just happening to be on the scene...

Kroo88, why are you being such a butthole? Absolutely nowhere in any of my posts did I say a quarter bore won't kill. Brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

You have turned the OP's thread into what's appropriate to kill a bear. Sorry, but I get tired of that discussion as it takes place over and over again. It's one of the reasons that people avoid the AOD forums.(Alaska Outdoor)

I dropped the subject after his post above. If you want to continue to argue your point you can PM and not muck up 99Lover's thread anymore than it has been.

22-250 with good bullets like tsx would be fine. but i hunt the same area you do and cary a 25-308. big enough for bear with heavy bullets.. so 250 savage would be my recmondation.

Is your .25Souper in a Savage 99?

Thanks to everyone for their contributions! I appreciate ALL the responses!

I'm pretty convinced the .250-3000 will do what I want!

With bullets of the same B.C. it shoots as flat as a .223 Rem and hits harder than a .22-250... What's not to like about that!

To top it off for me, my Grandpa had one and I've shot that rifle off and on all my life, first centerfire I ever shot.

When I get it, put a cartridge in and look at the headstamp, I just might think of my times with my Grandpa so long ago... and THAT has value to me!

Thanks again!

I loaded some 100 gr Nosler partitions this year just to see if they were a little better on fur over the 75gr Vmax. They shot well out of my classic 700. On the coast I woudnt feel under guned with that combo.
I did alot of hunting there when I was younger.

I've shot a few critters with the 250-3000 and think that it is an excellent varmint cartridges when loaded with the proper bullets.

I like the 75 grain VMax or Sierra HP and have yet to find a .257" bore rifle that wouldn't shoot them well. If you think that you need a little heavier bullet, the various 87 grain bullets from Hornady and Speer work well, as does the 90 grain BTHP from Sierra. That said, I don't think that there are many animals in the lower 48 that I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting with a 22-250 and 60 grain Partition combination.

When I find myself reaching for a rifle when I go afield to shoot deer these days, my hand seems to fall on a 22-250, 243, 25 WSSM, or 260.
