I just got a 5 year old English pointer. I have never Owned a pointer and got her to hunt Grouse. She comes from what I can tell is a strong background of champions. I did not get a lot of instruction with her, is there a good book I can read.

Has she hunted grouse before?

No, she has hunted pheasant, quail, and chukkar. In researching her blood lines. There is a dog that has and has done well on grouse and woodcock.

Have you hunted with her and if so, what was her range? I infer she has been a preserve dog, which could be a good thing.

I'm not sure what you want from a book. I'd take her hunting (preserve) and see what she teaches me. Then go from there. Sounds like you might be in good shape to start with.

Or trap some pigeons and set them out. It's cheaper but does take more time than the preserve hunt.

Who is she out of?

What is your experiance with hunting over pointers?

Presevere wouldn't be a bad place to start as already stated. See what she does without you giving her commands or minimal commands. That will show you where she is and what you need to work with her on.

The dog will teach you more than a book. Knowing her commands will really help out in the field.

Does she hold point or release on the shot?

I have hunted over one in teh past and he was a good field dog, rescued by a friend, no training til he was 6 or 7 but took to it naturally and quickly....

Heading to preserve this week. Had her on birds this past weekend. She did well. She holds on shot.

I had my pointer out the past few weeks and she does well on birds. I had the help of a trainer and learned a lot.
