I am planning a spring 2014 black bear hunt, and would really like some help. There are three in our party, and we are considering either a land based hunt, or a boat based hunt in southeast alaska. The boat hunts look sweet, has anyone been? Can anyone recommend some outfitters for both types of hunts? Any help, or recommendations for outfitters will be appreciated. thanks, Jeff Masters

Boys do we have bears. You need to draw for trophy areas as NRs in some units, others are wide open.

All of Southeast is now draw for nonresident. I don't know about outfitters, I haven't really needed one since I have my own gear. Fly in hunts to a cabin on tidal flats for 7+ days should give ya plenty of opportunities. You don't need tons of gear when you use forest service cabins.
Good luck, good hunting, and good times.

If I were a NR, I would go to Yakutat, rent a skiff(300.00 a day) 100 a man, and DIY. Bring GOOD gear and glass the beaches. Count on nasty weather. LOTS of brownies there, so make sure you're shooting a blackie. Also, saw 2 glacier(blue phase) bears there last year, which NRs are allowed to shoot also. If you do this trip once, you will go back.

Check out Prince William Sound for a boat based blackie hunt. Been there, done that. Excellent!
I will look up the outfitter tomorrow.

Beaches around Yak don't look like they'd be fun to run into on most days.

I like Kurt Whitehead (Alaska Glacier Adventures) on POW Island. This spring will be my third hunt with Kurt and Trina.
You hunt from a boat and rubber skiffs early and late, and fish whenever the mood stikes you. Gotta check your shrimp and crab pots too. Great hunting for BIG blackies while eating fresh seafood like kings.
Love it!
I was hoarding when hoarding wasn't cool.

They are great people, and don't do big bears any good.
