Anyone has experience with this combo? Looking for a powder to start load development with. The four I have that should work are WW760, H4350, RL17, and Varget.

TIA,

Paul

760 works pretty well start at about 71grs and work up. Other than 760 I have only tried VV N550. The rifle that I am using is very seating depth sensitive so I may not have given the 550 a fair chance.

Barnes has 66gr. of varget and 71.5gr. of WW760 as max loads for their 130gr. round in a 300WSM, both have identical velocities. Reloader 17 should be around 71gr. as a max load, I would start a bit lower with whatever powder you choose and work up.

My best load has turned out to be 69.5gr H414. I'm getting just under 3400fps.

Quickload has max at 73 for W760 I am at mid 73s but starting lower never hurt anything.

Thanks for the replies -- they are very helpful.

I only have 100 of the 130gr TTSX, which is the reason I'm trying to select one powder up front (I know that this may not work out).

When hunting Montana in the fall, temperature swings can be pretty extreme, so I was hoping to use H4350 (or maybe Varget) due to lower temperature sensitivity.

I did look at the LGS counter copy of the Barnes loading manual and 760(H414) looked to be the way to go. Any comments on 760s sensitivity to temp change.

No matter what powder I settle on, load development will be done with ammo that is close to body temperature.

Also, any comments on brass -- I have 100 new Federal cases which I plan on using. Also have a limited supply of Norma cases (maybe 35). All my Winchester cases are already loaded with 168gr Barnes TTSXs. Federal brass is all that seem to be available in the current supply crunch.

I've read that the Federal cases have less volume than Win -- if I remember correctly so does Norma Brass (I'll double check before proceeding).

I'll be using Federal 215 primers.

TIA,

Paul

If you do some checking you will discover H414 IS 760.

Theres something about the 130 ttsx...it's been accurate in every one of my 308 cal guns from the 308 to the 300 win mag.
Its not gonna hang in there with the hvy long bullets beyond 500 yds but it sure can be a laser beam to 400yds. Quickload thinks Re17 is the best powder for the 130 giving near 100% fill, about 3475fps from a 24" barrel, and about 60k pressure doing so.

the bullet has been sub-moa accurate in both 308's I've tried it in

I don't know about a 300 WSM, but my 300 Win Mag gives me well under an inch at 3480 with Varget. The 130 TTSX at that speed gives Bambi a bad time.

I referred to the powder as H414 because it came out of a can marked H414.

To further your knowledge;

WW231 = HP38
WW296 = H110
WW540 = HS6
WW570 = HS7

Now if I could find a powder with the same burn rate as the discontinued WW630P without the pressure excursions and accelerated forcing cone wear, I'd be happy.

Don't know if everyone saw the "bullets into cow femur" test here a short while back but the 130 ttsx was phenominal....at an impact speed of 3500 fps plus a bit it kept all its pedals....most of its wt and out penetrated many heavier class bullets.

TTSX's and their older brother the TSX thrive on speed. I don't know that you can drive them too fast. Its when they fall under the 2000 fps threshold that people start complaining.
