If you were to build a BPCR specifically for Long Range target/ gong Shooting [to 1000yds] and their is no restriction to cartridge or rifle weight and the choice could be scoped or iron sights, shooting from cross sticks. What are some of you guys n ladies shooting and what would you build?
ie: action type, barrel length and twist, rifle weight, cartridge, bullet of choice etc

I got a 1000 & 1 questions and thoughts bouncing around down here. Had asked a bunch over the years, but lost them and their replies when various forums crashed and I stupidly didn`t save the questions and answers. I figure this is a good place to get to askin again...

cheers,

Cam,

Yep, a 45-90 or 44-90. Here goes, High-Wall, 20 to 30% engraved, case colored, 32" rust blued barrel,18 twist, (44 caliber 16 twist), Baldwin sights front and rear, AAAA wood and finish, 30 line per inch checkering Winchester pattern, 13LB for international shooting and 15Lb for NRA shooting.

Simple and effective.

Kelly, couple of questions on that... What is the nominal groove diameter for the .44, and what length bullet will stabilize with the 16" twist...and 18" for the .45? Corresponding weights for "normal" bullet designs for the two calibers? Note pad ready...

I am..........disturbed.

D.D.,

Those are a couple of unexpected questions. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

The 44 is .447 groove dia. and the bullet is 1.457 long and weights 537G. I think one can go longer in bullet length and still be stable at 1000 yards. I'm not sure what powder weight will be yet as I haven't finished the rifle. The barrel is threaded and chambered and fitted to action and I haven't had time to finish the wood.

The bullet for the 45 is .458 groove dia., 1.422 and weights 540G. It's a P.Jones Creedmoor as is the 44. I have shot a 575G 1.500 long P.Jones Creedmoor with good success at 1000 Yards.

I like as cast groove dia. bullets, no sizing or any of that stuff for me. I also like the side of the bullet to be straight, no taper, with the section just in front of the first driving band to measure .002 under bore size or for a 45 .448

I've found the above to work well for me, so I stick to it.

I will be testing the above 44 bullet in a couple of weeks in a 16 twist 44-70 that I just finished. The reason for going to a 44 is because not many guys shoot them, I know right now of only one.

I'm not a ballistition. If the bullet hits the target in the same spot time after time I must be doing something right and that makes me happy cammer.

Kelley,

Will be interesting see how you get on with the New .44.
"Simple and effective." Very nice too! Sounds like you have a great set of firearms there. Your reasoning behind shooting a .44 would be the same for me when I have the opportunity at times to do things - cause no one else is... Are you building this rifle yourself and is this one of the rifles you would be taking to the Brisbane Creedmoor in Sept?

With your .45-90 at LRange, particularly with the 575gr bullet are you seating the bullet out to get powder capacity/velocity?

Out of curioisity, has any one been pursuing the rem .44-100 straight cartridge?

Are the UK, European and Sth African shooters using their traditional BP cartridges ie: the big British .45s for LR competition?
