your argument, although well documented, holds no water with me......if what you are saying is true, then i should not hunt with a .338 caliber bullet because the sectional density is only .225. If you use a premium bullet and place the shot correctly the animal dies. I do not like using a 243 winny for deer, however my wife chooses her shots very carefully and in the 10 years i have hunted with her she has killed 22 deer, and never lost one. My 9 year old son made a shot on an eight point last year, the shot was in the liver with a 243 and we had no blood and a hell of a time finding it. With a correctly placed shot the animal would have died within steps of where it was shot. I believe more in confidence in your rifle, bullet choice, and shot placement, than size of bullet, sectional density, energy, or any of the other garbage that no one 50 years ago worried about. Thats the end of my rant.

It is funny about the 303. My mentor the Vietnam sniper told me that when he was a kid, they would covet 303 cartridges so they could take out the heavier bullets and put the in their 30 wcf.(30/30) The 303 would come with heavier bullets and was popular up north due to hunting moose.

FYI I asked about the choice of bullet for ELK in a 300 Savage. Here is a link to an informational website!!!
Thanks

And gee, not a one of them killed with a "premium" bullet. He mostly shoots factory 150 Core-Lokts, as I recall.

O.K. one of you guys said nothing beats a 303 Sav, another said that old timers didn't worry about this garbage of sectional density or stored energy. I was cleaning my safe today and look at the ol' 303 ammo I had gotten when I bought a 303 with the carrying case. I think the old timers new perfectly well what weight a 30 cal bullet should be. I think we have made the industry try to suit us and not the humane harvest of animals. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Congrats on a great hunting rifle...

as for hunting moose with a 300 Savage... I hunt with what I want because I like it... I shot a buffalo with a 38-55... hunted moose in BC with a 358 winchester while I had a 300 Roy in the truck... I hunt with the guns that I want to hunt with b/c I enjoy it... I may have to pass on something b/c I don't have modern, optimal equipment... and I am okay with that.

+1 Drew...

And just to keep it going since it doesn't involve auctions, price estimates or politics...

Another angle on old timers hunting big game with bullets with a high sectional density. Oh, wait..

Good job, if you got that for under $500 I'd say you did very well. Wouldn't do a thing to that rifle until you shoot it and see how it does, most of them are pretty darned accurate.

Here are the pictures of the sling stud holes.

Wow,

I didn't realize what I was starting here... grin I also didn't know that Elk out west could read ballistic tables laugh

All joking aside, I don't know what load I would use for Elk -- just looking for input. My hunting set up in Idaho is a little different from most NonRes hunters. My best friend and Army Battle Buddy is a 3rd or 4th generation native of Salmon, born and raised from his homesteader great grandfather from way back. Three generations of cattle ranchers, so there's access to virtually unlimited connected FS, BLM and private rangeland. THey know the land. Biggest problem will be scoring an gun Elk Tag for their area. He told me to ensure I get a tag for the zone, get a bow for Plan B.

I have a good bit of experience with 130/150 grain Nosler BTs and know what they can do. I plan to have some fun with finding out what works best in the 99. I tend to pick my shots, believing placement is most important.

Biggest problem right now is finding brass, primers, bullets & powder. I've found about 15 boxes of Remington 150gr Core Lokt at $35/box, but that's not "fun". I'm going to stop by a shop I was told about in Clearwater after work Friday and see what he's got. Don't have a phone number for him, so it should be interesting. Clearwater is where all the Scientologist hang out eek

Please keep the discussion going -- need to learn more about those ballistic table reading critters out west!

Tom

Here is another ditty to consider, please also read about the swede 6.5 x 55 (the cartridge that has killed alot of moose in europe) along with the 300 savage. The problem with the 300 Sav is it was tailor made for a 150 grain bullet to match a 30-06 ballistics. Just like the 250/3000 Savage shot for ballistic marketing and not game harvesting.

Everyone, thanks for the kind words; I know I'm going to enjoy this 99.

Angus,

Thanks for the links to the articles -- interesting stuff to consider as I move out on this.

If my buddy and his cousins confirm the Elk there can read, I may have to go pick up another .300 "Sumptin" that's sitting on a consignment rack I know...

Tom,

It was not once a 99RS... not that it would make a big difference at this point in terms of value... your gun is valuable b/c it should prove to be an accurate and great hunting rifle.

It is a nice rifle. If I draw a bull tag I will have a 300 sav 99f looking for a bull in unit 29. I have some 165 grain hornady sst loaded now. But I am gonna retry the 180 grain route if I can find any of the H 4895. Last time I think we used combined technologies 180 grain bullets and rl 15. Not enough room.( I wanted to use the black bullets so I could tell it from my .308 cartridges easily) Good luck!

Nice rifle in a good caliber. I don't know much.....but I suspect that if you put a 150 grain bullet from your 300 Savage in an elk's heart lungs it will lay down and die.

Also stay away from any animal (especially elk) wearing Kevlar , also if they are wearing tights with a big S on the chest

Just sayin

That is a nice R! I had a nice pre war once but, went stupid and sold it at a gun show. cry My 1953 R has been with me on elk hunts but, I never found a volunteer to bounce a bullet off. grin
