My dealer is out of varget so i picked up a couple pounds of reloader 15 . Anybody use it and is it close to varget?
I will be shooting 168 -175 Grrain bullets in my two 308 rifles. Give me some starting load data if you have any.
Thanks

Some 308's I've had prefer RL15 to Varget. The reverse, of course, is also true. I found RL15 gets slightly more speed than Varget, but that Varget is more temp stable.

Varget and R15 are the first two powders I run in a .308. Either one is awesome and either one will do very well for you.

RL15 is about perfect for the 308.

I used a bunch of it with bullets in the 155-210gr weight. 44gr RL15 under a moly'd 190gr Sierra Matchking was my go-to 308 load for a few years. 2620 fps from a 26" bbl. A super consistently accurate load in the Rem 700 Varmint 308 I was shooting them in.

I read a few years back that the military was using RL15 now in the 7.62 sniping ammo, and that the formulation had been altered to make it more temp stable.

I eventually migrated to RL17 only because I also migrated to the 200+ gr bullets.

I couldn't find any Varget during the first Obama panic 4 years ago, bought RL15 as a substitute. Very slight improvement in accuracy with 168 gr BT in my .308. YMMV.

It seems that Varget and reloader 15 are the 2 most popular choices for 308. I feel like I remember reading that Federal GMM was loaded with reloader 15, but I could be wrong.

You are right GU, federal loads it in their168 match loads and Sierra lists it for accuracy load in their load maps. I use 44gr with sierra168 match kings, lapua brass and 210 m primmers. I use the same load in two 308's only diff is seating depth.awsome load. Can't speak for federal 175's

Varget
RL-15
TAC

One of those 3 usually produces a winner in 308

The only experience I have had with a 308 the RL-15 out performed Varget slightly on accuracy and velocity.

I've had the same experience. I only tried it with 150 and 165 grain bullets.

Just my two cents, RL15 and 308 go together like milk and cookies!

It's the same stuff Uncle Sam uses in 7.62 NATO sniper and match loadings. That should be enough to tell you that it works well in the .308.

An older powder that still works very well in the .308 WIN is IMR4064 - you might find that when the Re15 and Varget are sold out.
