I might get the chance to go out for hogs in TX for the first time with my gun... Seems like shots are gonna be 100yds or so, and at dark. I have developed loads for both the Sierra Game King and Partition and are trying to decide what to bring. I would have to load some, since I do not have any loaded rounds.
Gun is a 7mm Rem Mag
I have had excellent accuracy results with the 160gr Sierra Game Kings, and actually punched my first whitetail ever with a 160gr SGK loaded to about 3000fps with 64.5gr RL22, which was also my first kill with my own reloads. It was shot broadside at about 80yds, and was a complete pass through. Accuracy with this bullet and load is MOA or better.
My other deer kill with reloads was again with a 160gr Partition loaded with 63gr RL22 in the same hunt slightly different POA, but close enough for that distance. That load shoots to 2900fps or so, slightly less accurate, but still plenty for hunting...
Sooo, for hogs that could actually be tough, fat and provide less than ideal shots, should I pick to load the PT or SGK? I could rack up the PT velocity more, since there are no pressure issues, but would have to test accuracy
Better bullet for the duty? or is it a toss up due to heavy and long bullet construction?

NPT is never a mistake.

For hogs, deer and such it really doesn't matter much, any CC bullet will do.

Is a NPT considered cup & core?

I'd say leaning more towards premium than std. C&C.

I guess one could say it's a duplex C&C, one up, one down...

It would be a toss up for me since I'm a big fan of both bullets. However, if you throw the 154gr hornady sp interlock in the mix, it gets even harder to pick the "right one"....Hard to go wrong with either of these choices...I'd probably pick the one that is the most accurate in the said rifle and call it good..

Best medicine for thick bone, thick muscle, gristle, dirt caked hides and potentially ornery attitudes.

I have not hunted Hogs, have been told by fellow hunters that have they can grow rather large 500+ lbs, can snap and have grizzly bear like attitudes.... With or Without being shot at.

I too like the 154 Hornady Inter-Lock which I use in my FN 284 Win. Exclusively. I just got a No. 1 RSI in 7x57 which I am working a load up for. I have killed hogs from 40 lbs to 300 plus, with rifles from 22 Hornet w/ 39 gr cast boolet to 338/06 AI w/210 NPT bullet. Everytime it was a different and most just knew they were in the wrong place at the right time! Shot one once at 25 feet with a Browning M78 in 6mm, hit it in the lower jaw bone and pissed it off. He started screaming and another hog jumped on him and they started fighting. Had my M 29 S&W shot both. Loads of fun that day! 500 lbs plus of meat laying on the ground that day!

Either bullet will work well. Don't believe all the stories you hear about how hard they are to kill. Bullet placement is the key. I have killed them with a 22LR. My youngest son killed two with his 45ACP this year shooting 185gr HP Noslers. I have killed a few with partitions but have kill many with cup/core bullets.Rick.

Believe it or not, the .17 HMR can be an effective hog killer, that is if FMJ, CCI rounds are used. My buddy shoots them in his hog trap using a .17. He stands back around 30' or so, far enough back to avoid nervous hogs, running around in the trap. As they look and stare, he lines up his sights so that he's shooting thru the wire fence, hitting them mid forehead, about an inch above a line between their eyes. The .17 blows their eyes out on stems, instant death. Also, the .17 kills them pretty well with a neck or head shot outside the trap.

The secret is the full metal jacket for good penetration. That said, most any bullet with decent penetration will do the trick.

Hogs are not tough and can be killed very neatly with a .223 soft point. If you want to use a 7 mag, go for it, but it's not necessary. A 160 grain GameKing will work just fine, as will a Partition.

The only advantage a Partition might have is you might be a bit more likely to drive it through one hog an into another for a two-fer. But then you might be able to do that with the GameKing too, depending on the size of the first hog and what bone is hit in that hog.

I'd be much more worried about how bright your scope is.

Thanks for the input, guys. I have seen hogs shot with .223 and they go down, but it was a suppressed + nightvision combination. This hunt will be different and I might not get the chance to shoot them exactly where I want to. I picked the 7mm Rem Mag, because that is what I currently have in centerfire, good to know that either bullet will do. I might load and try them both if I have a chance since POI will be close enough for the ranges we might be shooting at. interestingly, 150gr BT with IMR4831 hit almost the same POI at 100yds too.

Scope is a Conquest, and I am considering getting one of those "kill lights" for the top of the scope if I go to the hunt.

I loaded some 160 gr Nosler Part. yesterday and they shot great.
I used new brass and RL 17, 43.0 grs and Win LR primers. Didn't get to chrono them, but they not mild. 7x57 Mauser, Ruger No.1 RSI. No signs of pressure or extracting issues and dead on at a 100 yards!

There are very few animals in the world I wouldn't poke with a 160 NPT.
