I can't comment on Remington 243 brass, I've always used Winchester. Suspect it will be just fine though. If you really wanted to get fancy you could go Lapua, but don't think it's warranted on a 6.5 lb rifle, plus it's kinda heart wrenching to lose 90 cent a piece brass in the snow or sagebrush.

H4350 and RE17 will be great for the medium to heavies, probably a bit slow for the light bullets. Something along the lines of H4895, RE15, Varget, or Big Game works great for the 70 and below crowd. Mule Deer has some great recipes, I'm sure most are here, but they are also in his Rifle Loonys book.

I was just thinking, I've had 5 243s in the last 5 years, and am currently without. I shall have to remedy that situation soon.

Gotta be a little quieter than a 22" 270.

Ha ha. Those 243s are fairly loud with the 22" barrel (quite a bit of powder down a small hole), guess I can't remember exactly how loud vs. a 270 - both are as loud as I like from a pickup cab. I used my Ruger 270 for a coyote gun one winter; pretty sure I lost a schit ton of hearing from that one.

Thanks again, yeah I hear you on the $$$ brass, not needed for this one!

I found everything at midwayusa, 3 boxes of 95 grain BT's. If they don't shoot you get 'em for Christmas...grin

Saw a big yote this morning, of course no gun.
Two dogs, an ax, a scoop shovel, a pile of old baler twine. Regular cab pickup, gets to be too much chit so I've been leaving the rifle.

Tomorrow I'm takin' one though!

That always seems to happen. Dad went to a funeral in Lewistown a couple weeks ago, and for some reason didn't bring a rifle. Saw 8 coyotes, several standing stupid as could be right next to the road. He's been packing ever since!

Those Big Sky overhead racks work pretty well in a cramped cab, at least until the velcro wears out and the rifle falls on your dome while bouncing across the field.

I've thought about one of those, couple guys I know have them and they appear to be pretty slick. Little tight on overhead room though.

Our dedicated ranch rigs have them; I don't see a height issue unless you're like 6'6" or something.

We have a boat paddle 223 that's pretty much lived in one for the past ten or fifteen years, when it wasn't being overheated on prairie dogs or whatever else needed killing.

That reminds me, I should probably run a patch down the barrel one of these years.

Some vehicle designs don't take as kindly to them as others, kinda gotta measure and find out. The best gun rack I've ever been around fit over the visors, and was nicely padded. Had to screw the visors directly to it, as I recall.

Sam,

The 243's ain't real quiet. Doubt you'll hear much difference between that and a .270. I like it better than an AR though. Those things are LOUD.

Components and loaded ammo are available and there are lots of good 6mm bullets available. A buddy and I just reloaded some 80 grain TTSX's and Ramshot Hunter test rounds. They should be smokin' fast and dig deep.

I have owned scores of bolt action hunting rifles, but, just never seem to find a .25-06 that I really like.....well, something to keep my interest high.....

I had a minty Henri Dumoulin .243 and an as NIB P-64 Fwt. in .243, just never warmed to that round and they went away. I seem to feel most comfortable with larger bores and last autumn, finally got a .220Swift for when I can hunt predators, so, see little point in another .243.

While I agree that the actual "caliber" of one's hunting rifle(s) is much less important than bullet choice, shooting ability and shot placement on game, I also think that there tends to be a bit of "overstatement" of the capabilities of rather small bullets on large animals. It is probably just my innate conservatism, but, in general BC rifle uses, all factors considered, I feel much more comfortable with a larger round and often with a .338WM while working or hunting, especially solo, in our typical terrain and circumstances.

So, for ME, and others who differ are just as correct, for THEM, I would choose a .35-06 over a .243, always.

I wanted one for well over 25 before I stumbled into the right deal. I haven't regretted it.

If it will be your only rifle then I say .25-06. If you have a larger caliber then I would go .243. I have a .243, 6.5x55 and .270 so don't see the need for a 25-06. I have shot a friends 25-06 and noticed a significant increase in recoil over my .243. But like I said, if you are only going to have one rifle I would go 25-06.
