Hello Everyone,

While I did attempt to search the forum, I didn't come up with all the much recent data on reloading the .458 Lott. I am looking to load up some Barnes TSX in 450 grain and 500 grain using RL 15 and I was wondering if anyone here and any good recipes to start. I may also give the 250 grain CEB's a try as well. If you have a powder that works better for you in the .458 Lott than RL 15, I'm all ears! Thanks in advance for your guidance!

I've loaded my .458 Win. mag. using RL15 with the Hornady 500 gr bullet. The 1994 Handloader's Digest has an article on the .458 Win. mag. and RL15 is listed as one of the powders used to develop loads. It's a mildly compressed load with 500 gr bullets, pressure is relatively low and accuracy is very good. Velocity is just under 2000 fps (23" barrel).

I haven't tried RL15 in my .458 Lott yet, but I would probably get similar results with higher muzzle velocities.

Been using Barns TSX 450grs, 68gr of H4198 crimped and getting 2372fps over the chrono and very shootable
The rifle is a rechambered Win70 with a 21" barrel with a Luepold 1.5-4x20. The rounds are fire formed .375H&H cases, and the primers are Fed215.
Recovered the bullets out of the sharp sand in the bunker, and all perfectly opened up. All still at 450gr.

Standard load in my .458 Lott is the 350 gr TSX bullet and RL7 for a muzzle velocity of about 2600 fps (24" barrel). I can form and trim .416 Remington magnum brass to make .458 Lott brass, but it's easier just to buy Hornady .458 Lott brass.

That would make a nice load for doing driven Boar. How much RL7 are you using?
The reason I fireformed the brass, was because I couldn't get hold of any at the time. I have some Hornady Lott brass, thats now in stock to replace the fireformed stuff I made for a trip to Africa. I took a my .375wby with me as well so wasn't worried about the head stamps been cheked as they do in Africa.

I use 73.0 gr of RL7 with the 350 gr TSX bullet (reference: Hornady Handbook, 7th ed.). I have a good supply of .416 Rem. mag. brass since my .458 Lott rifle was converted from this caliber, it's a Sako AV -

Using 81.5 gn TAC with 450 TSX (from Barnes website). Very lightly compressed and excellent accuracy in my rifle. Second choice was H4895 but was much more compressed than TAC to get 2350fps.

I just loaded up some 430 grain LBT style cast over H335. I haven't shot them yet so can't comment on how it works out. Trying to get about 1900-2000 fps with this load.

I don't have my load data handy so won't post powder charges. I used 458 win mag data as a starting point and worked up, and was able to get 2300 fps from 500 gr hornadies.

With the 450gr X bullet I seemed to run out of powder capacity before hitting peak velocity and only got 2200 fps. As I recall the 450gr X seated to the canalure had the same powder capacity as a 500gr hornady loaded to the canalure in a 458 win mag case.

RL7 works great with 350's, I kept my loads on the milder 458 win side, 2400-2500 fps and had great accuracy with both Hornady and Speer 350's.

I'm still waiting to pick up my new 458 Lott, it's a CZ 550 American Safari. I too am interested in usable powders, it seems to like different powders than either my 375 Weatherby or 416 Rigby.
I thought powders like H4895, 748, RE15 etc would be the better choices, but I'm finding data hard to find with the powders I thought would be best. I do have data for RE15 max with the 500gr RNSP is 79gr, unfortunately I have very little of this powder left and supply here is months behind. I'm really looking for data with a powder I know I can get easily, like 748 or H4895.
Can anybody help?

Cheers.

This is out of your old Ruger. Barnes 500 gr TSX, 75 gr H335. This group is "Off the Sticks" @ 100 yards, and will consistently shoot 1" or under if I do my part.

Wow Grizzley- that beast sure shoots! I'm glad it found a good home with you. If you're looking for bullets even more effective than the TSX's, check out Cutting Edge Bullets. They have some light for caliber .458 bullets that provide truly amazing performance on game. Michael, the guy who started B&M cartridges, has done extensive testing on these bullets and used them on a recent African safari with great success! I bought some in 250 grain, 295 grain, and 420 grain bullets. I have not had the chance yet to do any load development in my new .458 Lott but I'll report back when I do...
