All of my 700's are or have been at least 20 years old so I have no experience with j-locks and xmark triggers. My question is can the j-lock be eliminated by simply replacing the striker and cocking piece shroud from an older 700.

You didn't ask, but you'll want to replace the curvy firing pin spring too.

Thanks. I figured it would work but thought maybe they had changed the threads on the bolt body or something's to prevent such. A modification .

No modification. Just get the whole piece as a unit from Brownells and screw it on.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

I've never owned one of these. Is there a difference in worth between a j lock 700, and a normal before or after j lock 700?

Most guys prefer the non J-locked 700's, but I doubt that they are commanding much more of a price. Some guys might even prefer the J-lock, but they would be the rarity. I certainly wouldn't let it stop me from buying one. It takes just a couple of minutes to change it out. I even hunted with a J-lock for about 6 years before I knew they were a bad thing

I've hunted for several years with more than a few J lock rifles. Having no children in the house, I merely put the lock on fire, put one of the key thingies on my key chain and forget about it. I've never found it to be a problem except in cyberspace.
Aim for the exit hole.

Other then the spring rubbing against the inside of the bolt body and binding not a thing wrong with a J-lock. The "about to be departed" one on my 700 7saum sounds like a squeaky door hinge , I guess that is part of the design as well.

Personally I don't care for one, as such I try to buy early Remingtons sans lock.

I talke to Bob Hart about this issue a few years back. He said that he had built a lot of long range rifles with j lock bolts. Once in a while there may be a problem, but it was rare.

I've replaced my J-locks with Piercision firing pin/shroud units. I guess Gre-tan makes good stuff, but his financial backer/angel tried to get me fired a few years ago (lawyers can be like that, especially when I said "NO, I will not write what you tell me to write") ... anyway, I backed off Gre-tan because of Jordan Funk, Esquire. For those who are unfamiliar with the curly J-Lock firing pin spring, below is a photo of one ... next to the Piercision unit. Blessings, Steve

Me too! If they shot bad we would tinker with them. Otherwise we'd just keep shooting. I go a j-lock varmine stainless 700 rifle that shoots good...J-lock and all LOL. I think we all lear something on these forums and because of the nature of the beast we learn some bad habits I've never owned one of these.
