Is that barrel rusted on the outside? It looks orange in places.

The pig's in the freezer, and no, the barrel is browned. Guess the "Vivid" color mode on the camera is making it look more orange than it really is.

I Once frowned on the brown, but with a little age came an appreciation. Looks awesome.
Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

A cousin killed a turkey with one a number of years ago, and swore that it killed the bird well, with little meat damage. Our season opens this weekend, and I might just have to try it.

Well, give us some information on that nice looking rifle. Who built it?

The rifle was built in the 1970's, by a gentlemen named Lauda, and I frankly forget where he lived, but it was a GB auction. He hunted with it until age got the better of him. The barrel is a round ball twist 34" Douglas. I recall from his comments that he tried to make it as close to an original as practical, using reference books. I'd say the workmanship is overall pretty good, minus a couple of oopsies that are hidden.
It shoots pretty well with .535 balls, showing decent groups at 50 yards. 90 grains of Swiss FFFg yields 1800 fps.

OK 'fess up, did shooting a particular flintlock a couple of months back have anything to do with your present ownership of this rifle?

No, I've had this one 9-10 months, IIRC. It got to go hunting at the Hog Hunt 3 weeks ago, and did a fine job on a young hog. I'm thinking about taking it turkey hunting next weekend. I do think I like Hawkens the best of the traditional muzzleloaders. But I could see a flintlock Kentucky rifle being an interesting project...
