Ovis and Art....re:the good guys vs the bad guys....

This is why I am coming to the Campfire first....I trust many of you guys and know you won't steer me wrong.

Another question: Drawing a tag in the restricted areas...how far out would a successful draw be if I applied this next go round? Are there preference points and such? Smart would be...have my chit together in case I draw right away? Explain the Alaska tag draw game to me....please. Is it like western states? Some of that you need a lawer to cipher out....

Thanks all and keep it coming...The soonest I can get on a plane is two years from now....accrued vacation time large enough to make the trip (new job)...Sooo, we have a lot of time to plan this out. I'm hoping to hear from every member here who has sheep hunted Alaska. Thanks again!

The draw system in AK is completely open. There are no preference points, nor anything similar. You may apply for three different hunts for each species and applying costs $5 each hunt. At one time you had to buy a license to apply, but I think that has been dropped.

Like someone else said, drawings for sheep are due 12/6/06 for tags in 07. Odds of drawing are not good. Critters could be incredible... but the weather is a little brutal this year. Too much effort directed at the real bruisers for there to be many truly great sheep in the areas, but there are some and "representative" rams are common.

Most of AK does not require a drawing permit. Cheaper hunts can be found in areas with smaller ram averages.

Romo...good info thanks....

re:equipment list, sure why not if you don't mind. The only shopping I truely enjoy is for new gear <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. I'm sure NY mountain sensible stuff is different than that needed in the Alaska mountains....

Art, is that three applications per year?, lifetime?

One your permit application (each year) you can enter 3 different drawing hunts. Get picked for one and the others go away. $5 per hunt. You can only submit the one application during a given drawing period. You can apply as many years as you want.

Ok, I have to admit. I've read both Sheep Hunting books by Russ and followed them to a "T" last year on my sheep hunt and I didn't die. Now, I understand the story about hamburger jerky and Randy Ulmer, but.....what else?

Kusko that's a great lead to the question I have for Art!

Hey Art, did you save all of Riley's bathwater? (just grinning here, I oughta be gettin stuff done, but why resist taking a poke at one of my favorite residents of the only real city in AK?)

Hey I didn't mean to start a book war here . I was mearly giving reference to books that are related to the subject at hand . While I do not believe that those 2 are the be all end all on this subject they do offer basic info that a novice could benefit from. I would have to agree with Ovis and Randy's comments on this. However I would be very interested to here what authors others would recomend. Quite frankly I don't consider anyone an authority on any subject , I prefer to takes bits and pieces from many rather than all from one.I enjoy talking , listening , learning and reading with anyone when it comes to hunting and fishing. I think everyone may have something to offer.Art I don't think Ovis meant any offense or discredit, at least I din't read it that way.

I mean, he is not the first Alaskan author to open his mouth in writing and have it published. I know of one who mentioned the Nosler Ballistic Tip as one of the best bullets you can use for Alaska Big Game. I've used Ballistic Tips, they'd be great if you're into making hamburger without a grinder, but other than that, I'll stick to my Partitions or X bullets.

Don't worry about it, I'm not an idiot...I'll read every book mentioned hear if I can find them. I can spot BS if it's there, undeniable truth is hard to hide.

I think it is pretty obvious my gentle style stepped on Ovis' toes <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> and that was not what I meant to do. I was heavy-handed in my cheap shot. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I did apologize to him by PM for it. I would delete it, but later readers would be confused by the flow if I did that.

It is not rocket science to decipher my agenda. I do stand by the basic concept the book is shallow, with details weak and obvious.

Gilchrist's work is light-years ahead.

To avoid untracking this farther I will stop critcizing Tony on this thread.

I would have to agree with you on Gilchrist but felt his stuff more advanced hence why I did not recomend him. I met with him a few times when I was hunting Montana on a regular basis and became quite freindly with some of his guides. They were all top shelf.

Wildswalker,

There are a few, but not many outfitters in Alaska who use horses for sheep hunting.

If you backpack, you will not want to lug around a handgun OR a heavy rifle.

I find the Gilchrist books very interesting.

I have hunted with Lance Kronberger's partner down in the continental US and you would be hard pressed to find better.

Yeah...I'll leave the handgun home....probably not to many things at 9000 ft wantin' to et me...no need for the bear gun....Nice to know though that the powers that be in Alaska are not anal about the use of a side arm.....

I'm goin' book shopping.....sheep books.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
