Will the 338 Federal function in the Enfield magazine and will the bolt work with no changes if I do a barrel change to 338 federal? Any ideas as I already have a DPMS LR 338 Federal and like the way it performs. That way I can keep from having too many different calibers around.

The round will likely work and feed OK, but that is one long and heavy action to build a short action weakling round or cartridge in. My much customized 1917 Enfield is barreld to .338 all right, but the 8mm Remington Magnum necked up to 338. Now THERE is a proper 33! 225gr TTSX's at 3100fps. Another great choicce would be the very similar 340 Weatherby.
If you want another 338 Federal (why, one might ask) then sell the Enfield and buy something with a short action. 1917's should become 300 H&H's or Weatherby's or 416 Rigby's and the like. To dumb them down to 308 based cartridges is to test the patinece of ones fate.

338-06 may be better here too
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Better, yes, but still no 340WBY or 340 Tyrannosaur (My name for the 338/8mmRemMag). I always thought it a waste of perfectly useable action and magazine length/space as well as weight to confine these fine rifles with mere '06 length cartridges. SO much more good can be had and done here.

This Enfield was my Dads and I started shooting it in the 50's so I will not let it go for a new gun but the barrel has had a lot of rounds through it including armor piercing rounds. Maybe I will go with a 6.5 wildcat.

I fully understand the sentiment! Mine was my dads, as well. I got it when I was 13 and as such is not ever on the chopping block either. Same as you I literally wore out that '06 barrel with cheap milsurp ammo shooting at jackrabbits and ground squirrels etc then shooting in Silhouette competitions. By using the old oversized to .309 Sierra Matchking bullets I was able to squeeze silhouette match winning level accuracy out of that old barrel for a couple more years and then it become a 300 Weatherby. I killed a boatload of game with it as such but wore that barrel out too quickly not understadning as a young man that rapidly firing a bunch of 300 H&H ammo to make 300WBY cases would eat up the throat so quickly SO.... after about 10 years as a 300WBY it become what it is now, a 338/8mm RemMag aka 340 Tyrannosaur.
For a 6.5 wildcat, you can do no better AND use all of that wonderful action length with a 264STW. With a good quality fast twist barrel, that would be one fantastic low recoil long range supershooter!
You have an awsome, ready made true Magnum length Mauser type of action there, USE it for something long, big, fast and cool!
If you build something sedate, weak and slow like a 6.5 creedmore on this action I will find out where Loomis WA is, look you up and smack you upside the head with a PO Ackley handbook for shooter and reloaders - the hardbound edition! <G>

I don't go for sedate and week like the creedmore or less. I already have a 264 wm with 30" barrel 1 in 8 twist why on earth would I go down hill in 6.5. I was thinking on the lines of the 6.5 allen magnum. Which pushes the 142 SMK to 3550 fps. Or the 6.5 x 7mm RUM.

When you were talking about the 338 Federal I was a bit concerned for you. And a big fat 7 wouldn't be bad, either. Do you have a proper dangerous game rifle? Not many better donors for a 375 or 416 of some sort than your 1917.

What do you consider dangerous game? I have 1-223 AR, 1-264wm, 2-30-06, 1-7mm RM, and 1-338 Fed. Also 1-AR style MKA1919 12 gage with 3" capability. That should cover Washington rather well.

Mine was almost a .35 Ackley Mag, but a .375 H&H (or Weatherby) would have made more sense. Things happen, tho', and for the last 45 years, she's had a .300 WinMag long-throat chamber. Anything less(case-wise) is heresy, lol. Have fun, Gene

The big five of Africa and the big bears of Alaska. Even if you really don't think you will ever go there (though you really SHOULD at least once in your life) no rifle collection is complete without a dangerous game capable rifle. 375 H&H is easily the most practical as it would be a darned good black bear, Elk and Moose rifle as well. 375 Weatherby would be a great choice as well, with its ability to utilize 375 H&H ammo if needs be. Same-Same with 375AI. I have not been to Africa or Alaska hunting in about 5 years, but still have loads of fun with my well travelled 416 Rigby. I take it to the range and let others shoot it quite abit, packed it during black bear season, shot my hog with it at the 24hrcf hog hunt and sometimes even blast a coupel of 4 ounce Beldens Ground Squirrels with it. I think of it as an overgrown 375 on steroids. Cool factor and fun factor with a true medium bore DGR are way up there, IMO.

Some more really fun ideas:
338 Lapua
358STA
8mm RemMag
7.62 Lazzeroni
300RUM
338/378WBY
338RUM
You are in the rare and enviable position of owning a hunt ready true MAgnum Mauser, CRF, fixed blade ejector, real full length action. Use it for what it, and almost only it with very few others, can be used for.

Hint: It's between Nighthawk and Conconully. Brazos: Perhaps it would make more sense if you said it's west of Molson and Chesaw? Northwest of Tonasket? Though it's been a couple years since we've driven through Loomis, we're just a wee bit north of it - more or less. All the best to you all this Easter. Regards, Dwayne

Yeah, could've said northwest of Tonasket and southwest of Oroville, but wanted to pull his chain.

The m1917 is the rodney dangerfield of rifles but the damn things just work!!! I also grew up using one and am thinking of buying another in 300 H&H that is a full on custom....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
