(I thought perhaps I posed this Q before, but I don't see it in my history, so here goes...)

I found a dozen baggies of materials all made up for a tying class, but they're not labeled. What do these make?:

Size 8 or 10 hook, standard wire (or so I judge);
Yellow thread;
Shortish, fineish, deer hair;
Dryer sheet.

(Someone has suggested that the dryer sheet might be for preventing static in a hair stacker, not a part (cut wings?) of the fly proper.)

The first fly that comes to mind is the Tom Thumb. It has a tail, wing and body all tied with deer hair. The yellow thread cross wrapped could have it represent a grasshopper.
That of course assumes that the dryer sheet is, as you mentioned, in the bag as an anti static.

Possible, but I think not. I don't recall the name as one of the class flies, and I don't think the hair supplied is long enough.

Cute pattern, though (I just Googled it); only twice as complex as Darwin Atkin's Cartop Caddis.

Tom thumb would be my suggestion also. Fly fishing is new for me but when I have time i"m really enjoying it.

Haven't seen one for years but what about a Haystack? Again the yellow thread forms the body. IIRC you tie a tail of deer hair, could extend the butts to the base of the tail then over wrap, add deer hair wing, go fishin!
Dryer sheet = anti static.
Jeez, I keep this up and I'll have to do a column on the Haystack.....probably will anyway lol.

Again, don't think so. Name not familiar in the context, and I think (from googling) the original used a dubbed body, perhaps of muskrat. There's no way this teacher would have passed up the opportunity to use more muskrat! (And fidelity to originator was a virtue.)

The Humpy has a hackle. The materials bags contain no feathers.

Not that, either. I have the class instructions for a Stimulator- all sorts of other materials.

Thanks for trying, all. Still hoping...

Over 35 years, there were many, many class flies.

A deer hair ant doesn't sound familiar, but I'll check.

I've paged through most of the binders, still can't determine.
There's a Goddard, but it calls for a hackle.
If the packages contained a feather and/or some dubbing, it could be one of a trazillion patterns; but they don't.

So here I am, all dressed up with student packages, with nowhere to go!
