I'm wanting to do a Wyoming elk hunt next October (2014) for my 30th birthday. When do I need to get the process started?

Do I need to buy a preference point this year?

I will be going through an outfitter...should I just contact them?

Does anyone have a good recommendation for an elk guide?

You will need more than 6 preference point to draw in a trophy area.

Start buying preference points and you might draw a good hunt area in Wyoming.

Unless you you want to hunt cow elk (I highly recommend)outfitter bull tags are $$$$$.

Hunting bull elk can get very expensive.

Outfitter cow hunt is about $3,500 plus the cow tag.

If you draw a bull tag outfitters will be contacting you.

HOWEREVER the first thing you most do is research what area you want to hunt. Yes the time to start is now because the applications need to be submitted in January 2014.

Lots of real crappy outfitters. If they allow booze in camp find another outfitter!!!! Be sure to ask that question FIRST!

At a bare minimum, you'll want a buy a point this summer ($50) which will help you draw a license next January.

Talk to the outfitter ASAP, he will know how many PP it takes to draw in his area. There are two different levels of tags in Wyoming (and prices), he may want you to put in for the more expensive tag to better your draw odds. I'd ask him about deer hunting. It is never too soon to get the process started. Good luck!
