I have a couple barrels that I want threaded.
Rem 700P 308 takeoff 26" heavy
I want it cut to 22" or so, recrowned and threaded 5/8x24
Then I have another same contour just a 223
I want it cut to 20" or so recrowned and threaded 1/2x28
Just wondering where would be the best place to have them done or if anybody on here could do it for me for a reasonable price. Thanks in advance.

What do you consider a cheap price? Many smiths charge different rates. The best isn't always the most expensive and the cheapest isn't always the worst.

As an example, I generally charge $125.00 to pull, cut, thread and recrown a barrel, plus freight. The price may vary, upwards, depending on unforeseen issues. Never know until they are encountered. grin

Is there a rule of thumb for how long to make the threads? And does it vary by diameter?

What you have done is not nearly as important as how you have done it!!!

Depends on the device. Here, I prefer to set the length to the actual device being used. I also prefer to "machine time" all ported suppressors rather than rely on peel washers and such. The appearance of shims and washers doesn't look very professional in my humble opinion.

As malm said, the threads should be matched to the part. If you dont have the part then the best choice is to make a thread square. Square meaning length and diameter the same. Shims and spacers are a no-no by any definition.

Malm is spot on with his recommendations and his techniques. You couldn't go wrong with having him do the work right.

Heh, heh. I need a thread protector made and a 'smith in town said fifty bucks or so for that, whenever. You'll get it figured out -- listen to Malm.

Where is a good cheap place to send barrels to be threaded on the muzzle end?

In the event that you haven't learned this lesson, yet.... But Good and cheap are mutually exclusive adjectives. grin

Malm does excellent work. I had him swap a barrel on a 243 for me and it was very reasonable and excellent work. It was done before his estimation too. smile

Good and cheap seldom go together and generally equal disapointment.
